This was our first trip to Salem, and thanks to the Daniels House it will not be our last. The Daniels House was amazing. It was like steping back in time. Kay and Ana were really friendly and more than eager to help us out in any way. We will be going back as soon as we can. And the homemade muffins at breakfast were so good.

Of all the places I stayed in the States 'The Stephan Daniels House' (run by Kay Gill) was the most intriguing, historic and comfortable places I have ever experienced. Kay and her wonderful staff have created an environment that is both an interactive museum and a bed and breakfast. Kay herself is full of amazing stories for those who wish to hear them. I can recommend it any higher than simply brilliant :)

This is the most interesting B&B I've ever stayed in...the many floors, stairways, rooms, hallways are most fascinating! Kay and Anna are so willing to chat and be helpful in any way. I found the place to be very clean and organized. You will find many brochures and maps of the surrounding area. The location couldn't be better. Within easy walking distance are: wharf eats, 5 min, village main street-10 min, catholic church-5 min, witch museum-5 min, great food is everywhere. We felt so comfortable at the inn, that one night we didn't feel like going out on the town and found ourselves playing gin and chatting at the dining table, just the 2 of us. Very homey! Make sure though that you ask if your bathroom is shared or not shared. For a trip into Boston we drove to Revere which has the subway stop called Wonderland. We hopped on that and it brought us right to the aquarium and was 2 blocks from Bike Adventours for our Boston bike tour. For a fitness center we used Salem Fitness, another great place, which is a 10 minute drive to the other side of town.
You can't go wrong at the Daniels House.

..."Well we will see you back next time you alumi" madame Kay said to me as she bade me goodbye from my second trip to her majestic B&B in as many years from just about as far away from it as you can get - from my great land downunder!
Moments earlier I had explained to Kay and her delightfully compassionate and attentative assistant Ana, that I now consider myself "family" or better still part of the "Stephen Daniels alumni"., determined to return each year!!

When you are fortunate enough to live in the most amazing country on earth Australia, and to take long 4 week annual leave holidays abroad, there are a few standout places where you would like to linger, Crete, Stockholm and Salem are my standouts.
And Kay and Ana and the Stephen Daniels House are the stand apart within the standout.
Salem is like an orgasm of the senses. There is a lot to compete with. Mystery, intrigue, black darkness,..... and then there is this quirky and authentic and highly hospitable and welcoming inn from the cold.
Extremely eclectic and romantic if you want to be left alone the place is yours, and if you want company and advice there are the ever faithfulls..did I mention Sabrina??
In brief you are crazy if you dont drop your old salt anchor here. As a footnote not for the pss elegant and soulless!!!

Room Tip: Impossible to go wrong, short of not staying there in the first place!!!!

The overhwelming musty smell was the key reason for our extreme reaction - deciding not even to stay the night. My wife and I could both feel the mustiness in our chests, even after leaving the window open for a couple of hours to have dinner. Add a few cobwebs and that was it, we decided to move on.

To be fair, the bathroom toilet, sink and shower did look clean enough. Also to her credit, the owner innkeeper Kay was reasonable enough not to charge for the night despite our backing out.

It is a bit of a shame because entering the house itself is like stepping back in time to the 18th century. Everything has character - uneven floors, worn wooden staircases floors, irregular walls, old furniture, working fireplaces in rooms. There is too much stuff in the house though. Taking away a lot of the clutter to enable the place to be spotlessly clean and to get rid of the mustiness would turn this place into a unique star of the B&B world but until that happens it really is only suitable for people with a really strong chest, no sense of smell and no allergies.

PS there is no WIFI provided by the premises. Connectivity comes at the mercy of neighbours' unsecured networks, which may or may not work throughout the house.

Awesome, historical, no purple ropes, secret notebooks, hidden rooms, authentic to the max, 3 main staircases plus several more 'tweeny' ones along-side of the fireplaces that you can use!

If you want to instinctively start listening for sounds of breathing in the darkness when you wake up at night you will love this place. I really enjoyed the antiques and feel of the place, but it is far from as clean as it should be. There is a lot of dust piling up in the corner of the rooms and I was afraid of the shower curtain. I felt sad that the place is not better kept. I want to be afraid of the weird dolls and the darkness, not to take my shoes off in the bathroom.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The home was converted to a restaurant and inn in 1945 by the Hallers. Current owner Catherine Gill, affectionately known as Kay, purchased the inn in 1962 and has proudly served as innkeeper and caretaker during 49 years . Making us Salem's oldest running Bed&Breakfast! Upon entering the home one is immediately enthralled by the sheer number of antiques and collectibles that cover most every conceivable nook and cranny. Antique pottery next to historic English puppets, laced with cross-stitch art works, majestic portraits, antique toys and so much more. A life time of Kay's world travels and collecting. It is an eclectic feast for the senses. The home itself is a living museum where guests can take a step back in time as they touch and see, feel and explore and get a true sense of the history and romance that abounds throughout the entire home. Our goal is focused on providing you with an enjoyable and memorable experience and not merely a comfortable place to relax and rest your head. We may not be Salem's most modern inn but we are the most unique! Our suites are furnished with period four poster canopy beds and decorated with genuine antiques. There are no velvet ropes here! If history and ambiance is what you seek than the Daniels House is the place to stay. Come and meet your hosts Kay Gill and Robin McDonald. Enjoy our complimentary continental breakfast of fresh baked muffins, juice, cereals, coffee, teas and pleasant conversation. Child and pet friendly. Thank you for visiting and hope to meet you at the Inn.Owner and operator for over 49 years Kay. ... more   less
