I love this hotel!!!! Our first experience at the Hawthorne was over 13 years ago for their Halloween ball and I am proud to say the hotel has only improved as the years have past. The hotel is beautiful, rich in history with an incredible attention to detail that impressed this carpenter. The staff is knowledgeable and recommended places to go sightseeing and family friendly restaurants. They even answered our questions about the rumors of the hotel being haunted. The room was very clean and comfortable. Extra towels were brought to our room without us even asking. An hour after check in a phone call came from the front desk asking us if our room was as expected and if we needed anything to let them know. Nice little touches considering we were only staying for a short stay.
We had breakfast at the hotel the following morning which was delicious. The hotel manager came to our table to ask us if we were enjoying our stay. I feel that the hotel really goes above and beyond to make sure that you are enjoying your stay. If you are looking to stay in a big chain hotel this is not the place for you. If you want something with historical value, great customer service and a great location in the middle of town, this is the place for you. Will definitely be back again.

Dear retired333,

Thank you for your lovely review of the Hawthorne Hotel. It’s always great to hear from those who have stayed with us on several occasions and can truly speak to the Hawthorne experience. I’m glad that you enjoyed your stay, and that breakfast in Nathaniel’s was excellent.

As a historic hotel, we strive to hold on to our charming atmosphere, while still making improvements where we can to accommodate the modern needs of our guests. We are pleased when we hear from someone who stayed here over the past thirteen years, because you can speak to these changes and appreciate them.

I hope that you enjoyed the Ball when you attended. This year’s Party is set for Saturday, October 26, and we are very excited about our theme: Nightmare on Hawthorne Boulevard. We are sold out of rooms for that weekend, but tickets for the Party are still on sale. If you are in the area I hope you’ll consider attending!

We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Best,

My mother & I were recommended this Hotel while in Boston and therefore hadn't booked in advance. The Hotel Staff very kindly kept my UK mobile number handy & didn't lose a minute in contacting us as soon as a room became available (even though other guests showed up at the desk to ask for availability. We have Liz & Brynn to thank for that! we ended up staying a whole week as we couldn't imagine a nicer more Welcoming Hotel. All the Staff (Dilya, Melissa.....to name but a few) were all so helpful & caring that we'll definitely be going back as soon as we can!
It made our Holiday!

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with any of the rooms!

Dear Tina c,

Thank you for your review of the Hawthorne Hotel. Serving our guests is the focus of what we do at the Hawthorne, and so it’s great to hear that right from the start our front desk team was able to help you and your mother have an enjoyable stay at our Hotel. We appreciate your recognizing Liz, Brynn, Dilya, and Melissa in particular; I will be certain to pass along your kind words to them and the rest of our staff.

I’m also pleased that you found us so welcoming that you extended your stay with us. That is the best compliment we could possibly receive!

We look forward to seeing you and your mother again soon.

Recently stayed at the Hawthorne for a two night, mid week getaway with my husband. It is a lovely old hotel with plenty of charm and beauty. The staff are friendly and helpful throughout the hotel. The rooms are a decent size, nicely decorated and quiet. It is in a great location for most of the attractions in Salem. We parked the car in the Hotel's lot and walked every where for the two days we were in Salem.

We ate dinner in Nathaniel's restaurant the first night and it was very good, but a little overpriced. The next night we had something in the Tavern on the Green and it was very good and reasonably priced.

Dear JaneyN,

Thank you for your review of the Hawthorne Hotel. I’m glad that you and your husband enjoyed your getaway to our Hotel, and that you found our staff to be so friendly and helpful.

I’m pleased that you enjoyed dining in both of our on-site restaurants, and appreciate you including that in your review, as that truly helps to give fellow Trip Advisor readers a well-rounded idea of the Hawthorne experience. Because Nathaniel’s is a fine dining restaurant, we feel our prices are reasonable given the high quality dining experience our guests receive. Tavern on the Green is our pub-style restaurant, and though the service and food are just as excellent as what we offer in Nathaniel’s, the menu items are suited to more casual dining.

We are very lucky to have such a central location in historic Salem. Complimentary parking is guaranteed to our overnight guests, and so those wishing to explore are able to check-in and walk to such places as the Peabody Essex Museum, Pickering Wharf, and during October, all of the Haunted Happenings events. It’s great that you and your husband took advantage of this and were able to experience our great city.

We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Best,

We stayed at the Hawthorne as part of a 8 day New England roadtrip over Labor Day. We had an excellent stay.

The hotel is expensive but frankly there are not many other options in Salem for hotels. Most accommodations are bed and breakfasts. There is one other hotel on the Waterfront that was actually our first choice but it was sold out for the days we wanted to go.

THE ROOM
The non-suite rooms are small - there is no doubt about it. There seems to be much debate in reviews over whether the rooms are quaint and historic or drab, run-down and in need of updating. I am very picky about hotel rooms and a stickler for cleanliness but I found myself falling on the historic/quaint side. The furniture in the rooms is certainly old and mismatched as are many of the fixtures and the room has a historic inn "bed and breakfast feel" but the bathroom was immaculate (minus a few very small spots of mold on the window in the shower) and the bed was comfortable with modern, nice bedding. The bedding, dust ruffle, pillows, curtains and carpeting were not worn, faded or old. Good hair dryer, nice TV, plenty of lighting, quality toiletries, sub-par towels, no robes. One complaint is that the TV armoire cabinets folded out and blocked half the desk making it un-usable which was a pain considering there was not much space in the room to start with.

AMMENITIES/LOCATION
You cannot beat the location. It is a block from the major row of restaurants/stores and within easy walking distance of the waterfront and almost all tourist sites. There is free off-street parking behind the hotel. There is a nice restaurant and tavern at the hotel as well as a nice lobby with comfortable cozy sitting areas. This was our first vacation as parents with our 9 week old so we loved that there were eating/drinking options in the hotel so we did not have to venture far with the little one in the evening. We enjoyed the "Jazz Brunch" offered on Sunday. My husband and I both though the food was pretty good.

SERVICE
Service was fantastic. The bartender and servers who waited on us in the Tavern were unbelievably nice. The hostess who sat us at Nathaniels for brunch said "Anything for a child" when we asked for a table where we could sit his infant carrier down. That made us very comfortable considering this was our first venture out on vacation with the little guy. Front desk staff was accommodating and knowledgeable. Housekeeping staff was great.

Frankly the cost of the room is a big hurdle to get over but if you want a hotel with a historic feel and some personality with a good bar, restaurant and staff in a super convenient location then this is the place to stay in Salem.

Dear HappyNewlywed08,

Thank you for your lovely and comprehensive review of the Hawthorne Hotel. I’m pleased that we could be a stop on your road trip, and that you and your husband enjoyed your stay with us.

Our rates are very competitive with the surrounding marketplace, and reflect the costs of doing business in our historic building, as well as our central locale and all the amenities we provide, such as complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the building, complimentary daily newspapers and coffee service around the clock, complimentary passes to the YMCA with two indoor swimming pools, and many other things.

We are of course a historic Hotel, and for that reason we make it a priority to offer guests a unique, charming atmosphere, while still acknowledging their modern needs. This is why you found our bathrooms to be recently renovated, and why your room included an iPod docking station, a flat screen television, and comfortable, quality bedding. We also recently changed to a new amenities line, and love to hear that our guests are enjoying them.

It’s also wonderful to hear that you experience both Nathaniel’s, our fine dining restaurant, and Tavern on the Green, our pub-style restaurant. We strive for excellent food and great service, and so I’m glad that not only did you enjoy each dining experience, but that our staff also made you and your family feel welcome and comfortable. I will certainly pass along your compliments to our team.

We hope to see you again soon.

Sincerely,

I've stayed at the Hawthorn several times. The staff has always been great. They are professional, friendly and very accommodating. The hotel is very clean and well preserved with many modern updates. Some of the rooms are somewhat small, but that is part of the charm of an historic hotel. Our accommodations on my most recent visit were outstanding, a large corner suite overlooking the commons and the Witch Museum.
The location of this hotel couldn't be better, You can park your car and walk to just about everything that this wonderful town has to offer.
Nathaniel's restaurant has a full menu and an excellent chef while the tavern is a great place for lighter fare and a cocktail after a long day of exploring.
For a real treat, try the Halloween package. If you're lucky you might get to see a friendly ghost wandering the halls. It's a unique experience you won't forget, not to be missed.

Room Tip: When possible, stay in one of the larger rooms. The corner suites are large and sunny"

Dear William C,

Thank you for your wonderful review of the Hawthorne Hotel. As someone who has stayed at the Hotel many times, we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us and fellow Trip Advisor readers. I’m sure that others will find it particularly helpful that you have experienced both of our on-site restaurants as well.

I’m pleased that you’ve enjoyed your stays with us, and it’s great to know that the updates that we have been making are being appreciated. As a historic hotel, it’s important to us to maintain our unique atmosphere, while still keeping in mind the modern needs of our guests. This is why our bathrooms have been updated, and our Library has just recently undergone some wonderful updates.

I’m also so glad that you have tried our Halloween package! The weekend of our annual Halloween Party is such a treat. We of course sell out of our package well before October, but tickets to this year’s Party, Nightmare on Hawthorne Boulevard, can still be purchased. The Party is on October 26 – we hope to see you here!

Warm regards,
