We booked the Hawthorne after reading reviews on Trip Advisor and I must say we were extremely satisfied with this hotel. It's a pet friendly hotel and we were bringing a 6 mo old puppy with us. Check-in was 3:00, but we arrived at 10:30 in the morning and not only was our room available, they upgraded us to a bigger room with 2 full bathrooms! Our puppy also received a gift and a room service menu! The staff was extremely pleasant and very helpful with any requests we had even though there was something going on constantly for the 4 days we were there - bridal showers, a Pink Tea for breast cancer, which lasted the whole day, as well as a crowded tavern and restaurant, AND they are in the middle of major renovations! Everything seemed to run very smoothly. The location was the cherry on top! We never used our car the whole time we were there. Everything we wanted to see or do was within walking distance. Would def recommend this hotel and we will def stay there again.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your great experience with other Trip Advisor members. The fact that you stayed with us for four days means you had a good amount of time to really thoroughly evaluate our property.

We love taking care of our guests, as well as our guests' pets. We are thrilled that you appreciated that extra attention.

It is especially helpful to other travelers that you noted how conveniently located we are. You can walk to everything you want to see in Salem, right from here.

I often tell prospective guests that staying in Salem is also the best way to see Boston, because the commuter rail leaves from only a short (3-block) walk away, and takes only 29 minutes to get into North Station, which is in the heart of many of the attractions in Boston.

Thanks again for writing. We sincerely do appreciate it.

We recently stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, and we had a great time. This was the second great experience we have had with the hotel. The staff is friendly and helpful, especially Adam at the front desk. The room was clean and fresh every day, and the location is in the perfect spot to walk just about everywhere in town. While we were there, the hotel was under renovation, but it was of no bother to us at all. They do not do any work early in the morning, and if they did, we heard and saw nothing. When we called down to housekeeping for extra pillows and blankets, they were at the door almost immediately, and brought what we asked for exactly. The bar in the lobby, is really inviting, and a great place for a nightcap. We really love the hotel, and will probably stay again when we visit the area. It's close enough to Boston, that we drove into town twice, and saw the sites there as well.

Great Hotel!

Wow, this is a terrific review. We are blushing!!! Thank you so much for the accolades, for we really do work hard to try to please our guests, so when we do, it makes us furiously happy.

Certainly one of the most telling parts of this review is the fact that this guest has had not one, but two excellent stays with us. The guest who returns pays us the largest compliment, since they are basing their return visit on their satisfaction with the first stay at our hotel.

Many times we have pointed out to travelers that Salem is fabulously convenient to a stay which includes a visit to Boston. You can park your car in our lot, and take the commuter rail right into the heart of the historic areas of Boston, with minimal hassle, and in only 29 minutes. It could take you that long to find a parking space in Boston, not to mention how much it costs to park there. So your suggestion is greatly valued, because it springs from the true experience which you were kind enough to share.

It was also great to learn that the renovation process was not a bother to this guest. Our contractors are very concientious, and try diligently not to disturb our in-house customers.

Thank you so much for writing to tell others about your experience. Reviews such as this are a great help to potential travelers to Salem, and we sincerely appreciate your time and effort in writing.

I just stayed at the Hawthorne for 3 nights during a family gathering. The design of the hotel's website should have prepared me for the dowdiness of the hotel itself. Everything needs updating: the lobby, the elevators, the hallways, the rooms, and - especially - the bathrooms. The hotel is currently under renovation, and the window treatments and furnishings in my room appeared to have been recently replaced, but what they have planned won't really address the main problem: the bathrooms. They are tiny and poorly designed, with the toilet placed right at the doorway and inadequately insulated (no storm windows in mine), so that cold air seeps into the space and chills everything. Hot water was not available at all the first morning, or perhaps it was the chill air leaking in that made it so tepid. Also, the wood trim in the bathroom is rotting in places and needs to be replaced, not repainted. While my bed was comfortable, soundproofing in the walls is inadequate, so I was blasted out of bed early by conversation from the next room. Free Wi-Fi was appreciated, and the staff went out their way to offer service. But the physical plant just disappoints completely.

While we cannot make every guest into a raving fan, it is always difficult to read a review that is so unlike all the rest of the recent reviews on this site. We obviously do want all our guests to enjoy their stay.

In reviewing our records we can find no instance of a recent visit that matches this profile so that we could see which room was involved, which is unfortunate. We do always respond to guest complaints, as we want our guests to be happy, and is certainly the case here.

It is true that while our renovation is going on, we had to interrupt the water recirculating system, so it takes a long time to get hot water from the basement to some of the rooms right now. The hot water is there, but it just takes a long time to get to the 'end' of the run right now. This will be back together by the end of April, when the first phase of our renovations is completed.

While this guest might think that this is a renovation that only addresses things superficially, that is not the case. We are replacing all of the water pipes with new copper pipes, we are adding ventilation to all the bathrooms which was not the norm in 1925, and we are redesigning the space that we have to make them function more efficiently. There will be new granite counters, new sinks, faucets, mirrors, makeup mirrors, curved shower rods and new Kohler state-of-the art showerheads in all of the renovated bathrooms.

We do know that there are a couple of rooms with missing storm windows, which got broken and could not be easily replaced. I assume that was one of the rooms that you had. These will be replaced now that we can get the sealant to adhere in the warmer weather. Certainly having that be an issue for this guest would be a reason to offer a rate adjustment, if only the complaint had been brought forward to us.

While not every guest enjoys a historic look to a hotel, I can assure potential future travelers that we receive many compliments on the look of the lobby and the elevators, which were refurbished just a year ago. Perhaps this guest simply prefers a more modern looking building all around. That is understandable, as individual preference plays a large part in determining satisfaction with something as subjective as the "look" of a place.

In regard to the look of our website, we are unsure what this comment really means? We are looking into redesigning our website, just to keep it looking fresh and incorporating more functionality to it, but that is an on-going process with all websites.

Again, I do wish this guest would have contacted us directly, as we always try to have every guest leave feeling that they received value for their patronage. Perhaps that might still happen? I would welcome it!

I just have to say that I had so much fun staying here. It was just a short walk to the resturants and pubs. The evening manager Adam was so friendly and showed us all the places to go to eat and drink. We also went into the Tavern on the Green and met some locals, were we sat and talked with them and Jae the bartendar was awesome too! When i go back I will stay here!!!

We are on a pretty tight budget so stay in a hotel over $100 a night is a little bit of a splurge right now. We picked the Hawthorne mainly because of its location and the fact that it was pet friendly. We were not disappointed! When we arrived with our dog, they informed us that they had a bigger room they could upgrade us to for no extra charge and they also gave us a free dog toy which our dog loved! They also have a dog room service which we didn't try but was a cute touch! When we asked if we could do a late check out, they were more than accommodating. The room itself was clean and simple. We were told they just got new mattresses and the bed was comfortable. They are undergoing rennovations so I think the rooms are all going to be updated. Later in the evening we had a drink in the hotel bar which was cozy and the service was excellent. I really loved this hotel and can't wait to come back.

We are always thrilled when travelers take the time to write about their stays with us. This review is helpful to future travelers in many ways, and we are so grateful to the author.

Our renovations are on-going right now, and we know that they are already being well-received by our guests. We can't wait for everything to be done!

We now have a choice of several dog toys for our furry friends who stay with us, and are always happy to great a new pet friend of the Hawthorne Hotel.

It was great to see that this guest enjoyed our Tavern, which is a favorite of the "locals" of Salem as well. It is a tiny room, with just under 50 seats, and so that cozy feeling comes naturally.

Thanks again for writing and sharing your great experience, and we look forward to welcoming you back again, just as you look forward to returning.

We stayed at the Hawthorne over Columbus day weekend and had a great time! For starters we had a parking spot which if you have been here on Columbus day weekend you know it's crazy! We arrived early and let them know at the desk our vehicle was out there, they gave us a placard to put in the window. Then we were off to explore Salem. We have a teenager and a baby so it can be hectic at times...pushing a stroller thru Salem is no easy task! We love Salem and have been going for years. My husband used to go all the time and introduced me to it and I instantly fell in love with the culture and charm this amazing place has to offer. We always wanted to stay at the Hawthorne so we did and you will pay the price! All in all it was well worth it. The Hotel is amazing in itself. Our room was large and had 1 and 1/2 bathrooms which I thought were funky! The walls in the room are thin so you can hear people walking by and such. What do you expect though it's a historical building. The Restaurant inside the hotel was great, my husband and I snuck down for a drink and brought food up to the room. This hotel is great because you step outside the door and all the action starts. The view from our window was amazing, not only could we see what was going on but also the ocean. They also put on a Halloween ball that looks like fun every year on Halloween, and it's popular. So if you always wanted to stay here give it a shot it's worth it and the staff is very helpful. We're def going to stay here again it is so CONVENIENT to everything. Perfect hotel if you have kids or not...it has a romantic charm to it which you instantly feel when you walk in!
