“A huge waste of time!”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

The Salem Maritime Museum was a huge disappointment. First of all, there is no dedicated place to park at the National Park. Parking is only available on the streets if you can find one. With all types of restaurants and shops in this area of Salem and very narrow streets, parking is extremely difficult. In addition, two tour buses unloaded and the park was swamped with more people with nothing to see or do. Secondly, we visited in mid September, long before the current government shutdown, and we found everything closed. The museum is under renovation, there is construction in the area, and the tall ship was closed to visitors. There was nothing to see except the outside of the ship. There was no mention of the closings on the website before our visit. A total waste of time!

We're sorry that your visit was unsatisfactory. Unfortunately our park tours and services have been reduced this year as a result of decreased federal funding. We take your comments seriously and will improve our on-site signage and website notifications to inform future visitors of these limitations as best as possible.

Government Shutdown prevented us from seeing the museum or touring the Friendship. The outside & the waterfront area is great.

“Great starting point for a different view of Salem”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

We had a timed entry for the docked tall ship and Customs House. Our tour guide rocked - great sense of humor and very informative. If all the witch trial stuff is verging on overload - try coming here to learn about Salem's history as a shipping port!
