I recently visited this historic site and was horrified (no pun intended). Hordes of people were trampling around everywhere. There was no grass left. I refer to this places as the Disneyland of Graveyards. I have a picture of a family eating their fast food lunch on a tomb. Salem should be ashamed of itself. This is NOT an amusement park. It is an important historic site. They need to put in pathways and protect the graves.

Very interesting walking through a cemetery with dates from the 1700's. Great spot for pictures and grave rubbings.

Interesting history and old grave stones/markers are the highlights of this Cemetary. The oldest in the area, the history is inescapable.

This is a wonderfully old and creepy cemetery in the heart of Salem, and it is even creepier at night! Unlike many cemeteries that close their gates at dusk, this cemetery was wide open for viewing at night. For a trip to Salem, it seems wrong not to visit an old cemetery with plenty of gnarly, aged trees. If you agree, this is a good stop for you.

My recommendation: Go! It costs nothing, and the gravestones are a treat to read.

We went through this Cemetery by ourselves and we didn't get much from it; however, 8 Central Ave there is a tour group that does tours of the cemetery and very enlightening local knowledge of the cemetery. Made the 2nd go around much better! A must see if your in town. the tour guide charged $8.00 each for the hour!
