As other reviewers have said, this is not really a museum per se. It is quite entertaining though. From the opening dramatic reenactment to the dungeon tour, you will learn a lot of fun facts here. More importantly, this is one of the best places to get ridiculous pictures!

Oh, and make sure you touch the beam for good luck.

I took the train from Boston to spend a day in Salem. The Witch Dungeon Museum is not a traditional museum (think more along the lines of actors and wax figures, with some historical information sprinkled in). There is a reenactment of the trials by live actors and a tour of the dungeon. You can purchase discounted tickets if you want to visit the Witch Dungeon Museum, Witch History Museum and New England Pirate Museum. Definitely touristy, but still entertaining.

Yes it's touristy and especially during the halloween season. But it is just downright fun and you will learn about the history of Salem in the process. Go.

The first note should be that this is not a museum, not like you might be thinking. Your visit, of course, starts in the gift shop and then you are taken into an church sanctuary where there are plaques around the wall displaying facts about the witch trials. It is nice (and historically accurate) that the Witch Dungeon would speculate about the hysteria being caused by ergot poisoning. After you've had some time to read the plaques, some actors join some very old mannequins on stage and do a presentation of an actual trial transcript. This is the interesting part that you won't get anywhere else. When that's done, you go downstairs into a poorly lit, very old and out of date replica of the dungeons. It is interesting to learn about how people had to pay for their own cells and their food, and the more money they paid, the bigger their cell could be. If you're looking for witchy things to do in Salem, this is okay (just okay), but your time would be better spent focusing on the maritime history or taking a walking tour.

Probably one of the better ways to get some nsight into the Witch Trials - different and informative. Museum provides an interesting story of the Trials and has various phsical objects used during them. Hear the words of the prosecutors and the accusers and the accused and imagine yourself as a front row witness to the events.
