“Really Great Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2010

We had reservations for a room that ended up being close to the humming trailers that are helping with the restaurant. After talking to the great person at the desk, he got us a room with a better view and a fireplace! It's a nice hotel with clean, big rooms with nothing really interesting or outstanding, but good people that work there, comfortable beds and nice TV!

I recently stayed here for 3 days and had a good experience. In Tucson , I had stayed only at the Arizona Inn, in the same neighborhood as the Lodge, for many years but have recently become disappointed with the AI because of consistently rising room rates - approaching $350 - and declining service, and wear and tear in rooms.

The Lodge is around half the price of the AI - booked on the Lodge website. The old rooms have character but are a little small and dark. The new rooms are very nice - especially for new hotel construction -which is generally cheap and disappointing -- and on the second floor ( of 2) some have partial foothill views.

The grounds and public areas are also nicely done - they are much less extensive than the AI - so it does not have the same destination feel and uniqueness - but the price difference is also huge.

The staff is enthusiastic and well meaning, if sometimes just a little unpolished. The general manager - I wish i could remember his name for sure - (Luis?) - is great and handled a room change request 100% right, on the spot.

If you havent been to Tucson this is in the center if the City - near U of A and within a few minutes of some restaurants, shopping and historical neighborhoods. 20 minutes drive to foothills area. It is a very convenient location but not the "resort" area.

My wife and I travel back to our beloved former home town of Tucson whenever possible to visit friends and soak up the desert air. We usually stay at the typical foothills resorts but this time chose to revisit Lodge on the Desert where we had stayed many years ago (we actually stayed in a guest suite with an indoor swimming pool). Since the last stay, the facility has undergone a major renovation with many of the 30's era guest rooms replaced with updated rooms and suites in two story buildings that were designed to blend in with the old architecture.

Admittedly, the pristine desert grounds and the historic older rooms were beautiful, but they were replaced with tastefully designed buildings and beautiful desert landscaping. Our room was large, bright and well appointed with Southwestern decor and had a fantastic balcony view of the Catalina mountains. Jorge, the manager, and his entire staff were courteous and delivered on every promise that was made when we booked the reservation.

The hotel restaurant was devastated by fire a few weeks before we arrived and was undergoing reconstruction. This was a serious blow during the peak of the tourist season and I wish everyone there the best of luck in rebounding from the setback. We look forward to our next stay at Lodge on the Desert and would recommend it to anyone looking for a laid back in-town Tucson resort experience.

We had a wonderful rate as vendors for the Tucson Book Festival and all my requests were confirmed upon arrival... 2nd floor, king bed, newer section. Staff was extremely pleasant prior to and after arrival. We had Jorge and Mathew give us mapquest directions and confirmed our restaurant choices were good ones. Even though there were 3 noisy trucks outside the building (housing there restaurant due to a recent fire), we slept thru with no problem. As soon as you closed the doors, it was fine. We used the small hot tub and it was perfect for our needs. I wish they had fixed the stopper in our bath tub. I did want to take a hot bath at the end of the day and I wasn't able to, even after telling the lady at the front desk on Sunday morning it wasn't fixed upon our departure Monday morning. No message as to why, I think it slipped through the cracks, but certainly didn't ruin our stay.
Easy access to the University and restaurants we were interested in and a Whole Foods on the way.

We booked the Lodge for a family weekend with our daughter at the University. This hotel is about 3 miles from campus and very convenient to drive. We read on Tripadvisor about the new and the historic rooms. The historic rooms still have not been completely renovated, but the new expanded hotel rooms are large, new, well appointed and have a gas fireplace. Many have mountain views. The property has a nice pool, restaurant and lounge, and a cozy library room off the lobby. This is not the place for a family who needs a lot of amenities, but if you are just in town on business or for a short visit, if the location fits, this is a very nice place. We will definitely return.

Kudos to Executive Chef Ryan Clark & staff for their hard work. Every staff member provided very nice service. I had doubts about staying here, with the restaurant arson yesterday, but I am very glad we did. They delighted us with complimentary coffee & baked pastries this morning.

I usually stay @ Westward Look Resort when visiting Tucson. But the Lodge has a more intimate pool & jacuzzi, along with 100% friendly helpful staff, will win my repeat visits.

My family recently stayed at the Lodge on the Desert and thoroughly enjoyed this hotel. Our room was nicely appointed, the grounds were lovely, and the character of the place was impressively Southwestern (I'll never understand why more hotels in the "Old Pueblo" don't make more of their heritage). A big plus was the spacious floor layout of the room and the easy access to the bathroom and shower. My mother is elderly and has limited mobility, and she definitely appreciated the ease with which she could get in and out of the shower and the bathroom. We also enjoyed the restaurant on the premises. Though there wasn't a huge selection of menu items, what we had was delicious and beautifully presented, and the serving staff was very amenable. One last positive note is the location. The hotel is fairly centrally located in the city, yet it manages to maintain a rural feel and was very quiet and peaceful during our stay. I highly recommend this establishment...oh, and I applaud the management for providing "green" toiletries.
