“Good standard hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2010

This hotel is a nice location with beautifully landscaped gardens offers a good standard of accommodation in a quiet part of Tucson. The food and drink is of a good quality, although prices are high ($6 for a bottle of mineral water in the room). The sound insulation in rooms leaves a lot to be desired (why is there a tendency to accommodate all guests in adjacent rooms in an otherwise empty hotel ?)

Nestled in the Catalina Foothills, the mountain views from the Hilton El Conquistador are breathtaking. We frequently evaluate our menu pricing and offerings and we have found that our restaurant pricing is competitive with other local establishments especially when you compare it with all of our resort offerings. I am sorry that your room location was not as quiet as you would have liked. When made aware, our front office team is always happy to assist our guests to ensure their satisfaction.

This hotel is in a great location in Tucson. It is what one would expect from a Hilton, but with an exception. The people in the room next to us had a screaming toddler who went at it all night. The manager Shannon was extremely kind to us the next morning and switched us immediately to a new room. Everyone was very accomodating and we would stay there again. There are Gambels' quail running around in the parking lot, which made it extra wonderful. The mountains are right there and the scenery is really off the charts. Thank you Shannon!

We spent a few nights at El Conquistador for USTA Nationals. After booking a room with the USTA negotiated group rate, we upgraded to a casita that was a short walk from the hotel proper. Our room was spacious and well appointed, with a kitchenette and two good quality LG flat screen TVs. The bed was outstanding; between the mattress quality and the peace and quiet, I haven't slept that well in a while. Though our room's patio looked out on a scraggly desert forest and had no convenient walkway to the nearby pool, we quickly figured out how to maneuver down the rocky slope without much trouble. The pool water was soft, not over-chlorinated, and the hot tub was deep and comfortable. Housekeeping was courteous, prompt, and efficient.

The on-site tennis facility was quite good, although the courts were starting to show some wear, with most having a network of cracks that didn't impede play, but certainly threw up an odd bounce every now and then. It was also a bit of a hike from the main hotel, during which we were forced to cross the first hole of one of the resort's golf courses. Court time was expensive, at $20/hour for reservations, although it appeared to be free if you just walked on without calling ahead. The "Country Club," also part of the resort and a few miles from the hotel, had an excellent tennis facility with outstanding courts. We were unable to find a shuttle between the main resort and the Country Club.

We only ate twice at the hotel. Breakfast was adequate, although over-priced, with a $17 buffet. Our second meal was a late lunch pool-side at the main hotel, which was also good (but not astounding) and also expensive. There was no continental breakfast, and the Starbuck's in the main lodge, while nice, of course was not free.

The main lodge pool was very nice, with plenty of room for families. There was a separate, large hot tub with a waterfall, a modest (yet fun!) water slide, and a kiddy play pool. The hotel required bracelets be worn in the pool area so they could charge for towels for non-guests, which was slightly annoying. The pool-side bar served food until early evening and was slightly understaffed, although the servers were very friendly and did the best they could.

My only complaint, other than constantly feeling nickled-and-dimed, was getting to and from the resort. There was no shuttle that I found to the Tucson airport, much less to Phoenix. The location is fine once you get there; most restaurants and attractions were a reasonable $20-ish cab ride, but if you don't want to pay for taxis and (like us) enjoy eating "off the reservation," I would recommend a rental car.

Located on over 500 acres of high Sonoran Desert terrain, the Hilton El Conquistador is a beautiful resort nestled in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Our front office is always happy to arrange for complimentary shuttle service between the resort and the country club, additionally our bell staff can assist at any time with a golf cart ride to the on-site tennis courts, golf, or any guest room upon request. Our bell staff team is a great resource to share resort information and provide the easiest directions around property. The Concierge is always happy to assist with arranging for a rental car, airport transportation, as well as recommending local attractions.

We are pleased that you enjoyed our pools. Our casita pool and jacuzzi’s offer a quiet relaxed atmosphere, while our main pool is at the heart of the resort attracting guests who wish to enjoy the slide pool, kiddie pool, as well as the jacuzzi & cold plunge.

Thank you for your feedback on Trip Advisor.

I recently stayed at the El Conquistador for a tennis tournament. It was very convenient the site of the tennis courts were at the hotel. The casitas were very comfortable! The setting was breathtaking.

Dear RDMCALONIE~

Thank you posting your comments on Trip Advisor. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. The casitas are a perfect place to stay at the resort, and with 31 lighted tennis courts the El Conquistador is a great location for tennis tournaments.

We look forward to welcoming you back should your travels return you to Tucson.

I was so pleased after seeing the location of some of the other hotels I had considered before booking. My only disappointment was not being able to play on the courts because the USTA was having their national championships. We lugged our racquettes shoes and court wear for nothing. We tried a night game but it was FREEEEEZING!!!

tip of the day: Pool/slide closes at 5pm so plan accordingly.

We opted for the breakfast deal so we don't have to rush around and FIND a breakfast place when visiting and only found out after our 3rd day (and all the vouchers spent) that there is a children's menu and child buffet price. We didn't notice because the first time they billed us full price for all and didn't catch it the second day as we were running out the door for our trail ride (highly recommend Houston's !!) Ooops - wish someone had told us that!

Also, I wanted a mountain view room - I was afraid the pool might get noisy but no worries they are quite a distance from the pool area and it is quiet (because they close early). We ended up with a view on the neighborhood development. Not great but it was a short visit.

We were so charmed by Tucson that it didn't seem to matter.

Definately recommend the El charro Cafe suprema!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on Trip Advisor. I am sorry that you found our courts busy due to the USTA championships.

The desert in the winter months can be quite chilly in the evenings, which is one of the reasons our slide pool closes at 5pm.

I apologize that you were not advised of our children’s menu, and I will forward your review to our Director of Restaurants.

Thank you again for your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Hilton El Conquistador.

Recently spent 4 nights at El Conquistador as part of a convention. Hotel rooms were clean and nice. We had a twin room with iron and board, hairdryer, TV, fridge (filled with chargeable items), coffee machine. Water left in the rooms for us was charged at high rate if we used it so we bought our own. Furnishings and fittings were not new but they were absolutely fine. We had access to free internet in lobby but had to pay for it in our rooms. We found that the noise of the room above us opening and closing their wardrobe door was really grating - need sound proofing between floors or to make sure they oil the runners on the cupboard doors.
Pool area was fun but all the various gates irritating - open plan between the various pool areas would have been more relaxing. Absolutely hated the plastic plates, glasses and cutlery at the pool - felt so tacky. If safety is the reason they should use better quality items although I've been to plenty hotels where they've not felt plasticware was necessary near the pool.
Over all I liked the hotel and the ambience that came with it but the food was just not up to standard. It was like they were trying too hard to make regular dishes "local" and not getting the combinations quite right. Also it did not taste fresh and flavoursome. Too many processed sauces to add flavour. There is one restaurant - the more expensive one that was not open for lunch - that served some very good meals. I also had one adequate salad with shrimp for lunch at the other restaurant in the main building but the rest of meals I had there were disappointing. My recommendation to anyone staying there is to have a car and eat out during the day.
At the conference the breakfasts served were all egg based, presumably to cope with those who had gluten allergies, but one breakfast was truly awful - just very cold very hard boiled eggs! Tasteless.
Staff were generally friendly and helpful.
Loved the Starbucks coffees available from the lobby "bar".

Thank you for comments on Trip Advisor. I am sorry that your food and beverage did not meet your expectations. The use of plastic cutlery by the pool is quite simply for safety purposes; however we frequently evaluate the products we use and we will definitely look into our Desert Springs cutlery.

I am sorry that the gates that separate the slide pool, and the hot and cold springs from the main pool were an annoyance. The gates are a state mandated code that we are required to have in place.

The Hilton El Conquistador is known for its friendly service, I am happy that you found our staff friendly and helpful.

Should your travels return you to Tucson, we look forward to welcoming you back.

My wife and I were in Tucson last month, visiting family, and this hotel was very highly recommended to us by Sacramento and L.A. friends. My wife's a golf fanatic so it was an easy choice, El Con has one of the most popular courses in Arizona. She rated it highly. It was expensive, for Tucson, and there weren't a lot of perks-- we got charged for just about every extra there was to get-- but the quality of the stay was great. The people there were friendly, knew their way around, and anticipated a lot of our questions and issues. Management, keep these people, they are excellent representatives for your hotel.
