“Ventana Canyon to Maiden Pools”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

We took the Ventana Canyon trailhead to Maiden Pools. Per the Sierra Club, it is 4.8 miles long (round trip) and takes 3 hours. It might take professional hikers 3 hours and I indeed saw some hikers running on the trail like mountain goats. It took us 2 hours and 10 minutes to reach the top of the ridge. Once we reached the top of the ridge, it only took about 10 minutes to get to the pools and the trail is flat. The trail to the top of the ridge is pretty steep for the last 30 minutes. Once you get there, the view is spectacular and it is a great reward for the hike. It took us more than 1.5 hours to come down. Take plenty of water and some food with you. There is no bathroom facility on the trail.

I stayed here with my elderly mother overnight on a day trip down from Scottsdale to Tubac. the resort was quiet as it was just after the holidays. We had to wait in the queue to check in for nearly 20 minutes but once I reached the desk, the help and care were excellent. I requested a particular type of room that would make going from the lobby to the cafe easy for my mother and they were extremely accommodating and we had a lovely room with a nice view. the trails around the resort are lovely and so I could get out and walk and my mother could enjoy the views from the bar or the room. the food was fine but pricey as it tends to be in these types of places. I would go back.

Room Tip: from one side, you can get a lovely sweeping view of the city and from the back side the view is mou...

My husband and I spent three nights over Christmas at Ventana Canyon Resort. The resort is located in a beautiful area of Tucson, right up against the mountains. This is a very large and spread out hotel and even the front desk does not know where the rooms are located. They had us park in a lot that required us to walk 1/2 of the hotel to get to our room. On arrival we had a little wait to check in as there was only one person on the desk. We then proceeded to our upgraded grand king room with a view of the city. The room was nice but strange. Room does have a Keurig coffee maker. The king bed sits in the corner and is huge, it was almost impossible (I am only about 5') to get into and it has two large barrel tables along the side. The tables require you to get into the bed in the middle and maneuver your way to the top of the mattress. The bathroom is good size but has a tub/shower that is about 4'X4' and almost as deep. We are in our 60's and found it to be difficult getting in and out of the shower.
I went down to concierge to ask about Catholic Churches in the area for Christmas service, but she did not have information . After going thru many folders, she went to the bell desk and provided the map. I stopped by the front desk to ask if there was a better place to park when I was told that self parking is $9 per day and internet is 14 but I could choose the new resort fee of 20.00 and it would include valet and internet.
The grounds for the resort are beautiful. Lots of paths you can take short walks on and the pool is nice. Hotel description said pool has grill open every day weather permitting but not that week. A holiday week when the weather was great and many people taking advantage of the pool.
Beware - this is a pet friendly hotel...There were so many dogs I was uncomfortable. One man was walking 3, one lady had her dog at the pool and while sitting at the pool we listened while a dog on a balcony barked constantly. Our balcony was located above the entrance and many people were arriving with all sorts of dogs. After as very nice Christmas brunch we walked back to our room only to find a dog had gone to the bathroom, not once, but three time in the hallway outside of our room. I know the dogs owner certainly was aware this happened but did not pick it up and someone had walked in it...I called housekeeping immediately. They should limit the number of pets and the locations. I felt like we were sleeping at a pet resort.
Again, the hotel is beautiful but we would not return unless we were assured that the pet policy was changed.

This probably was a nice resort 10 or more years ago. The golf course looked great, the rooms not so much. The room was large and spacious. But it had pealing wallpaper, minimal hot water, (1 1/2 showers of hot water!), stucco pealing off, leaking roofs.crazy light switch system and you could not turn off the balcony lights, they were on automatic. Still in the old paper charge system by running a pencil over your credit card onto a carbon paper, which scares me as they have to store those somewhere and the information is readily accessible. They need to update to a wireless charge system, even on an iPhone with the cube would help. We told them twice the small safe was locked in the open position but nothing was done about it.
In short, we were looking for three days/2 nights at a nice resort but it was not to be. In need of a lot of TLC.

Room Tip: Don't bother

We booked a last minute room for New Year's Eve, and we're not disappointed. The room service was delicious, the bathtubs are big enough for two, and the brunch, which I understand they serve on Sundays, was top of the line. We recommend the brunch any time of the year - and the resort, too!

We did not stay at the resort but the grounds looked wonderful. We did however spend an afternoon at the Spa; soaking in the outdoor hot tub and sitting by the pool. Went in for a massage a facial. The facilities were very nice. Both were wonderful and the two women who worked on my were caring and talented. Enjoyed them both.
My husband went to the bar that was attached to the Spa and had a drink - very nice place to hang out and bloody mary was excellent.

Green Features: Not sure as we did not stay at the hotel. The spa had nice robes, towels and reusable flip flops. Nothing seemed excessive.

In the past 10 years that I have been going to Tucuson. I have stayed each time at the Loews Ventana Canyon and each time I have had an amazing stay. The staff is always friendly & professional. The food is great and the rooms are very clean! I am very picky about cleanliness & they never disappoint. I usally stay at the resort with my husband & my 2 sons.
My most resent trip was a girls only trip for 5 days at the hotel. We had a great time!
