“Fears were unfounded”
Reviewed November 4, 2008

Courtesy of the Ramada's free wifi, I'm writing this review from my motel room, during the last night of a 4 night stay.

I was a little trepidatious in booking into this motel, given some of the previous reviews but I am pleased to say my fears were somewhat awray. OK, it's a typical Ramada Limited and, at $55 a night, you get what you pay for. What you get, however, is a clean room of decent proportions.

The room I stayed in could do with a bit of a touch up (the odd bit of paintwork) but it was basically fine. I am something of a light sleeper but heard nothing of any trains. The freeway traffic, again, presented no problems.

The breakfast was what I expected: toast, cereals, waffles, bagels; muffins; jiuce etc.

The reception was very friendly and accommodating.

Overall, I think the motel was well worth the price I paid and, yes, if I return to Tucson, I would willingly stay here again.

Very nice staff. Room was nice except for a dirty bathroom tub. Really good breakfast. I would recommend this hotel.

Couldn't get to the hotel in the first place- all exit/entrance ramps closed on I10 due to construction- a fact nobody thought to mention when we booked. Worst was, there were 8 teams of high school kids staying there - another little "fact" that was not mentioned. Between the kids in the pool all night screaming & yelling, and them stomping around overhead, and getting ice all night (ice machine right outside our door) - never got any sleep at all. Staff was "sorry" but no other rooms available and "they are kids" (like that's an excuse). Also - the hotel was old and the interior of the room not in good shape -woodwork in the bathroom crumbling, etc. Hair dryer broken. Still had to pay $90 a night with Orbitz discount and that was supposed to be a good deal. Never stay there - never stay with Ramada.

We went the week of the gem show in Tucson and this was the only place we could get. The parking lot was filled and we could not park there because the gem show public could use the parking spots and none were reserved for the paying guests. The room did not have any towels or wash cloths and we had to request them twice. The walls are paper thin and we could here people outside our room late into the night. And by the way, they do not mention that you can here the train going by all night long at least once an hour. The train blows its horn loudly several times as it goes by. The television was on the blink and when the hotel repair person came to the room, he said they were waiting for it to completely go up before replacing it. He placed a towel under it to position the tv to work.

We paid $149 plus tax for this one night stay that was unsatisfactory.

I stay for 4 nights and needed a place close to the University. The location was great! It was literally 5 min to the University and 20-30 min to the Desert Museum, all on the same road as the motel. I do think this was more a motel than hotel, but I was a very satisfied customer. The staff was very helpful and the breakfast was a real bonus. They have make your own belgian waffles, 3 different juices in addition to tea and coffee, cereals, pasteries, toast, bagels etc. The room was clean, carpet was like new. The beds were really comfortable-no lumpy, soft areas, the comforters were in really nice condition. There was a coffee maker, refridgerator and microwave. The bathtub was clean with a clean white shower curtain on a concave rod. The A/C worked fine. The only slight negative was a slight musty smell I have experienced before in other motels. The freeway is literally next door, and can be noisy, but it really wasn't too bad. The staff was fine with the idea that my college student daughter may stay over . If you want a romantic getaway, then this probably isn't for you. But if you want a comfortable bed, a small quick breakfast and close to everything, then I would definitely recommend the Ramada Limited Tucson. With the reasonable rates, I think it is a bargain. Restaurant recommendations: Yoshimatsu on N. Cambell for Japanese/sushi -really fresh and reasonable and the Blue Willow for breakfast or lunch-be willing to wait for a table, it is popular.

As previous guy said, this looks like a hotel on the Ramada website, and pictures, but is laid out like a motel.

The quality of the room matches up with it's 3 star status, but your door opens onto the street (and I was approached for money by a bum as I was unloading the car)
The Union Pacifc trains honk the horns for 5 minutes at a time through the night as there is a junction about a mile away, and the plumbing was a little noisy for the room upstairs (we had ground level).

You're also close to the I17, but if you live in a large city or are a heavy sleeper you'll not mind the traffic noise.

Otherwise room was large, clean, well equipped, and breakfast was on par with Holiday Inn Express, although presentation maybe a little more basic.

  • Liked — large, equipped room
  • Disliked — environmental noise

The benefit for you and I (but possibly not for the Hotel...err...motel...) is that the HSIA - High Speed Internet Access - that is free in all rooms, means I can get you my review live, as-it-happens, as opposed to after I get home.

There, see...I said a positive sentiment. So, while we're at it, let's get the other couple of positives out of the way, before reality really kicks-in. Turn on the in-room heater/AC (that does work), and you won't hear as much I-10 noise as you would otherwise. But good luck in drowning out the [----] train horns that seem to run almost all-night, every night, from the tracks that are about 100 feet from the motel. (Not exactly the Motel's fault, mind-you). The beds in our two-queen room were fresh-looking, and comfy. And the TV works. And hey, your parked car is pretty darn close to your room, first or second floor. And for the rate at this time of the year, I suppose the last-minute peace offering of the AAA rate helped lessen the fears of staying here.

So, here's the real info you need to know: Sports teams flock to this motel, because of it's lower high-season rates, and proximaty to the rest of the city. Not good - but wasn't all that bad, what-with the banging doors. The front desk is about as nice as it gets. The rooms are in dreadful need of fresh paint and new cocking in water areas. The rooms are extremely basic - a dresser, TV, desk-n-chair, coffee maker and hair dryer. The bathroom condiments did not have safety seals - so use at your own risk. The toilet worked, but surely needs to be updated. The bath/shower is evident of it's age, while still maintaining basic functionality. The cosmetic condition of the bathroom is desperately needing that fresh coat of paint, and cocking repair. The carpet and tiling make a passing grade.

The "non-smoking" room is definitely a falsity. I can't imagine how pungent the smoke stench is in a smoking-room, but in our "non-smoking" room, it is a downing "Welcome Home" experience at the end of your fresh-air day.

Major security issue, so please take heed: The dead-bolt on arrival did NOT come close to fitting the door-frame. Management saw me fiddling around with it, and offered to: fix it or check us out - as there were no other rooms available. But it was his calous candor that was very distasteful. However, service did arrive - in the form of two young gentlemen, who's professionalism and ability to fix the situation quickly, quietly, and completely, did not fit their "tough" appearance. There are still young folks who make meaningful, professional contributions! Way-to-go, boys!

Finally, there is a pool that was being used, a Deny's onsite with very friendly staff and patrons, and gas stations and conveniences nearby. However, there is NOTHING, and I mean, NOTHING else nearby. You'll need to get in the car to get anywhere with purpose. I would NOT recommend walking after sun-set in the area, and be very aware of your surroundings just to be safe. The streets in at least a 2-mile radius seem very seedy.

It's definitely a roof over your head, and DEFINITELY for the very, VERY basic and budget-minded travelor.

We'll likely be staying elsewhere next time - just not our cup-of-tea. And my lengthy write-up is intended to give you as much info as possible before you make your decision.

Bon Voyage!
