“Our worst accommodations in Arizona!”
Reviewed June 15, 2009

Our room smelled musty. I was greeted by small cockroaches in the bathtub, along with some sort of small black bugs. After scouring the bathroom (found some more small roaches under the sink and toilet), I searched the closet and found a LARGE dead dried cockroach...GROSS!!! We slept with the lights on and with the drains closed for fear of more coming up through the drains. My husband killed a large one in the shower the second morning of our stay. The floor was concrete w/out any type of rug and felt gritty. It seemed as if no one had stayed in the room for quite a while. The poor quality iron was bolted to the ironing board, which made the end of the board completely useless. I was sick to my stomach both days and totally disappointed. The property appears lovely on the web site and is very secluded. We anticipated a lovely stay at a historic property and ended up with a nightmare!

do not stay in room 16 , 17 , or 18... ancient cramped bathroom with 1930 dribbling sink with a machine bolt through the porcelain , broken window, leaking bathtub stopper and no room to shave. The extension cord behind the bed is undersized, not code. The wall paint is worn and chipped. The epoxy/concrete floor isn't fit for a mechanics garage. The TV remote didn't work in any of the rooms (1950 TV). No wireless internet although if you bring a CAT-5 you can plug in. No safe in the room.
The food , view and grounds are wonderful.
go to the brunch and avoid the hotel.

My husband and I spent a long weekend at the Hacienda in April...a return visit after our initial trip 9 years ago. Hacienda del sol is charming and delightful. We stayed in a Hacienda room (3) which was very large, nicely decorated with its own patio. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom was clean and large. The staff is extremely responsive without being cloying. They brought complimentary champagne to us while sitting at the pool on our first day which was a nice treat. The gardens and grounds are stunning. There are a number of photos from the days that the Hacienda was a boarding school and later a guest ranch. The mingling of history with updated ammenities and grounds makes for a perfect experience. All of the desert flower were blooming and while there we saw a gila monster, bunnies, javalena, and multitude of birds. The flora and fauna is spectacular. Also spectacular is the Grille, their on site restaurant. We had fabulous lunches and dinner their. Their wine list is outstanding. Waiter Michael was a delight. The Hacienda grows much of its own fruit and herbs and the quality of product is evident in all the food we tried. At the end of the weekend, my husband and I asked ourselves why it had taken nice years to return and vowed we will visit again in the not too distant future. Incidently, we got the best deal on the hacienda room by calling them directly.

We were looking for somewhere relaxing with a special atmosphere to ease the tensions from a trip for medical reasons. This was the perfect choice. It made our stay feel like more of a romantic getaway than a medical necessity. The staff were all so wonderful to us. The adjoining restaurant was not only convenient, but the food was excellent! It was peaceful and quiet with wonderful views and we will definitely be back for next years annual doctor visit. I highly recommend.

Feb 2009,
We just came back from a 5 day romantic holiday at this ranch. It is remote enough to enjoy the scenery and relax but yet close enough to all the best restaurants and attractions. We stayed in suite #4, a spacious 1 bedroom suite with fireplace and patio. It had gorgeous views of the canyons and sunset. Everyone there enjoy their job and is very helpful, including John (the watchman) who looks after the safety of the guests and of the wildlife (yes bobcats and javelinas wander the grounds at night), Larry (the manager) who is a wealth of infornation about Tucson's history and out of the way places, the front desk staff and bartender.
The grounds are beautiful, and the restaurant "The Grill" was fantastic with a wonderful wine cellar. We will definitively return.

Had a wonderful stay recently at Hacienda del Sol.

I missed the horses by a few weeks, as they had been moved out for the summer months. But the weather was still delightful while I was there.

Staff was friendly and very helpful with suggestions for day trips.

The grounds are absolutely lovely, and the old portion of the building has wonderful old photos of when it was an exclusive girl's school, back in the 1930's.

It does seem to have a very popular restaurant, and the wine list is extensive, however, I did not enjoy my meal at the restaurant - and the wait staff was not attentive. I was a single diner, as a previous reviewer had mentioned. However, the salad and dessert were fabulous!

Although there was also a wedding taking place when I was there - I found the rooms to be quiet and it was the perfect spot for a getaway.

  • Liked — Quiet, out of the way location. Great views, landscaping.
  • Disliked — One meal in restaurant

We recently returned from our second visit to Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch in Tucson Arizona, and I wanted to share what a pleasure our experiences there have been. Our Casita # 48 was perfect for our two week stay. There was lots of room, nice furnishings, fire place, and kitchen with microwave. We found it quite relaxing walking amide the beautiful manicured grounds.
The staff is as warm and friendly as could be. Larry and Dorothy as well as the rest of the staff were always available to answer any questions or assist us. Larry possesses a wealth of knowledge about Tucson and if you need a restaurant suggestion or reservation he’s the man to see.
Our first stop of course was dinner at the counter in the restaurant. I always learn a new thing or two and interacting with the chefs is always fun. Subsequent dinners in the main dining room found friendly and knowledgeable wait staff as well as delicious meals cooked to desired temperatures.
When we ordered room service, it was refreshing not to see a 20 % service charge and $ 5.00 delivery charge, and then a place for an extra gratuity. Don’t get me wrong I still left 20% but because I wanted to not because I had to. Its close proximity too many of the finest restaurants in Tucson is an added plus.
The rooms were always well maintained and if we needed a little something extra it seemed like it arrived before I hung up the phone.

We look forward to our visit next year.
