“Workout with Water”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Madera is a great hike. It is a fairly strenuous hike that is at it's best when given enough time to enjoy. From Tucson to the trailhead can be an hour drive, depending on where in Tucson you are starting from. Once there, be prepared. If it is between October and February there will most likely be snow if you go all the way to the top. However, the canyon can be just as much fun to hike in for 1/2 an hour, find a beautiful spot by the stream for a picnic and enjoy a lazy afternoon with a good pair of binoculars, a bird indentification book, and (optionally) a friend. Some of the best birding around is here, with an abundance of hummingbirds. And canyons, neing the 'river of life' in the desert will offer up many other species of plants and animals to enjoy.

“Quick cool getaway”

small stream through the area, many parking spots, cabins & chalets for rent, cooler than Tucson in summer. A bird watchers paradise.

“All Time Favorite Hiking Trails”
Reviewed May 18, 2014

Driving through Madera Canyon is beautiful. The hiking trails are breath-taking. You can choose from several trails that take you all the way up the mountain, while looking down into the canyon and across Green Valley. When you get up high enough, you can see the valley and some of Tucson. Gorgeous views for miles and not very crowded. If you make it to the top you will be at over 9,000 ft.

“Very good hiking, great escape”
Reviewed May 16, 2014

What a perfect place to get away from the desert and surround yourself with trees. The elevation is just high enough that it takes the edge off the Tucson heat. Unfortunately, we couldn't escape the rattlesnakes and nearly stepped on a very small one. But we considered ourselves lucky as in town, he would have been much larger and more angry. The barbeques and lunch pavilions were packed, so you might want to get there early if that's your idea.

A great, well maintained trail with beautiful views. A good work out, but not a dangerous or difficult trail.
