Great hiking, good birding. At least 100 hikes. Good picniking. Dogs can go but on leash.

“A Respit”

As much as I love the desert, Madera Canyon reminded me of what I loved about a forest. Under the trees it's so green and shady. The water where people fish is a refreshing change from desert sand and armored cacti.

“Amazing”
Reviewed March 14, 2012

When describing what an amazing experience Madera Canyon is, it is difficult to know where to start. If you are not familiar with Southern Arizona sky islands, make sure to pay this area a visit. Hiking trails range from the strenuous Mt. Wrightson, to the leisurely strolls along the creek and picnic areas. I love visiting the area after a rain to witness the previously dry creek beds teem with water and wildlife. Stop at the visitors center and pick up a map which details trail lengths and plan to start early. We have been there several times and after longer than anticipated hikes, ended just after dusk, which can be unnerving. Definitely plan on taking a lunch so you can stop and enjoy the scenery on the trail of your choosing before hiking back down. Bring some cash, as there is no ATM near and the park charges a daily fee.

“Surprise”
Reviewed March 6, 2012

We went up to the Canyon 3 times during our stay. Was surprised at that kind of scenery in the desert. There is a nice visiter center and have serveral varities of animals and if its in the 80's in Green Valley its nice to go up there as it is alot cooler but very comfortable.
