Tucson has a number of these great old hippie bars and Surly Wench is one. We strolled in from the sunlight into the dark and enjoy a couple of beers talking with the barmaid who also did double-duty with the house burlesque show (usually Saturday nights, I think). Big stage for a band, if there is one, and some locals hanging at the bar, giving it plenty of ambience. Fourth Ave is a trip and this is a good stop on your tour of the strip.

Popped in one evening and had a couple of beers. It was just before Halloween, so horror film was on the TV.

I love to come into this quirky place for a drink, great burlesque show or some quick bar snacks. I like to just sit in a booth and look at the cool decorations and artwork. The food is basic with a small menu but always perfectly cooked. My favorite bar food are the different loaded tots, turkey burger or tacos.

Based on the name and outside appearance alone, I was expecting a collegey Irish bar. However, we finally went to see Black Cherry Burlesque, a show they host once a month. Burlesque show was fun, entertaining, and a very talented group. Drinks are cheap, strong, and service is good. (Haven't had their food). A good variety of beers both on tap, and cans and bottles. Now I come more often for the awesome music they have. Thursday Night is a great: Italo disco, synth wave, synth pop, retro, old school dance, and new wave with no cover. I think Saturday is goth, electronic, industrial and more! So if you like music you won't hear at every other night spot, come to the Surly Wench.

We stopped in for lunch on a visit to the area. First appearance was that it was a rough place, but staff was friendly and food and beer were good. There were some colourful characters inside all right, and the décor is, well interesting, including two giant American flags over the bar. Worth the price for the experience at least.
