Azure Gate Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #1 of 45 Tucson B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 19, 2012

This is the third time we have stayed at the Azure Gate and it won't be the last. We stayed at the same time as Scott from Baltimore and enjoyed their company greatly. Christine and Dennis are the most wonderful hosts and the breakfasts are now legendary. We stayed in the Catalina guest house which is separate from the main house but a 15 metre (45 foot) walk and you are by the pool. The Catalina has it's own kitchen and there is a superb dinning area just outside the back door where you can barbecue or eat a meal bought in our self prepared. Watching a Tucson sunset while eating a steak is a wonderful thing. The breakfast area is in the walled garden and there must be at least 10 types of bird feeding in the garden during breakfast. Scott would know better. I am lost for more to say about this place as the hosts are always ready to help with advice or local knowledge but are also unintrusive and very pleasant. Christine loves to discuss politics and is very well travelled herself. Dennis is a wildlife photographer and will show you his photo's and tell you were you can see all sorts of wildlife. I like this place and we will be back again. Thanks Christine and Dennis.

The Azure Gate B&B was the highlight of our trip to Arizona in July. Christine and Dennis were warm and welcoming hosts. The breakfasts were amazing, beginning with wonderfully complex aromas wafting from the kitchen and grill and ending with sighs of contentment around the table. We stayed in the charming, colorful, and quiet Santa Ana guest house. We also enjoyed the beautiful guest areas in the main house, especially the library and sunroom. The exquisite use of color in the rooms (and on our plates!) was inspired.

Don’t think that Arizona in the summer should be avoided. The house was cool and the pool was refreshing. We loved walking the grounds to examine several kinds of blooming cacti; getting a brief view of a roadrunner and a Cooper’s hawk; seeing and hearing hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and finches at the feeders; exclaiming at our discoveries of delightful pieces of art in wonderfully surprising places; the faint scent of creosote bush after it rained; and watching thunderclouds build in the afternoon. We are already planning a return visit.

We have stayed at a number of fine B&B's over the years (several in Tucson), but not one matches the excellence of Azure Gate. This was our second stay, and we arranged our vacation schedule around our ability to remain at Azure Gate throughout our trip. If your "wish list" for a Tucson B&B includes: gorgeous desert location; attractive, well-equipped, and comfortable accommodations; truly gourmet breakfasts; and delightful, helpful hosts, Azure Gate is for you. Located on 5 acres of Sonoran desert, there are walking trails among the cacti and other desert plants, a beautiful courtyard with a pool, and hummingbirds and flowers abound. Despite its natural setting, Azure Gate is convenient to Catalina Highway with easy connections to multiple crosstown routes. We stayed at both guest houses, the Santa Ana and Catalina. Both have very attractive (and immaculate) living areas, bathrooms, kitchenettes, and upstairs sleeping areas with comfortable beds. Christine and Dennis Widman, the owners, have done an amazing job anticipating the wants and needs of a variety of guests - from juices, coffees, and teas in the kitchen, homemade trail mix, spa robes, bath accessories, to a bottle of wine and flowers to greet you. The Santa Ana, the smaller of the two, has a private patio, as well as an entrance onto the main courtyard and pool area. The Catalina is a separate building with several private patio, courtyard and seating areas. The mountain views are spectacular from both guesthouses! The Catalina offers the most privacy and a bit more space, while the Santa Ana provides privacy, but greater connection to life in the main house, which is charming. (Initially the spiral staircase in the Santa Ana proved a bit of a challenge for late night ventures downstairs, but we adapted and loved our stay there.) Planning each day is facilitated by large, organized binders containing restaurant recommendations, menus, local attractions, and removable driving directions for each destination. Dennis' beautiful, creative, and delicious breakfasts are in a realm of their own, and we found we usually ate only two meals each day. (On our departure day, we discovered that the continental breakfast available to early birds was plentiful, varied, and delicious.) Christine and Dennis are such wonderful, friendly, and interesting people that they add another pleasurable dimension to any stay. Reading several reviews will give you just a hint of what makes this B&B so special.

we were in tucson for 2 days visiting the south arizona late June
despite our late arrival we had a very friendly welcome where everything made us feel as special guests.
early morning the swimming pool was just a gift (the garden full of cacti is so interesting and relaxing) and then came the breakfast, a 5 stars restaurant. dennis is a great chef, his food is amazing and delicious (a real creator). Christine loves her place and knows everything about the area. we learnt a lot with her.
thank you for the wonderful stay we had.

Our trip to Tucson would not have been the same without The Azure Gate Experience. The attention to detail was impeccable, from the daily breakfast to the amenities in our private villa. Dennis and Christine could not have been more gracious and the information made available to us for exploring Tucson went beyond what any desert adventurer could want. I would make it a point to stay there again and strongly recommend it to family, friends, fellow travelers and anybody interested in an authentic and upscale Tucson Foothills experience.

The owners couldn't be nicer! These lovely people even upgraded us to a nicer room at no extra charge. The wildlife photos alone are fabulous! We stayed in the little cottage with the loft sleeping area. The main area is roomy and very nice, with lots of natural light and a great stocked kitchenette. The bathroom is a little tight , but clean and nice enough. The only downside to this room would be the spiral staircase that goes up to the sleeping loft; this isn't necessarily a negative unless u are unsteady at night or are a tall/large person. I tend to get up at night a couple of times, so next time I'd choose a different room(only for this reason). Definitely don't miss out on this B& B if staying in Tucson near the Catalina's. I wish I could move in here!!!
