“A Great Break from the Heat”

Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway

If you are in Tucson and have about 3-4 hours, I highly recommend the Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway. It is quite an easy drive, as the road has been improved in the last 10 years. The start of this mountain drive is at about 2,300 feet elevation. You can go all the way to the ski area which is close to 10,000 feet elevation. Along the way there are several places to stop and enjoy the view, flora, fauna, and rock formations. You will notice the saguaro cactus get replaced by pine trees and cool breezes. There are several absolutely stunning canyons to view. Hiking trails take you into the wild for a short or long hike.

On the way back down, I recommend letting some wind in to the vehicle so the kids don't get car sick.

Enjoy.

I have been going up the Mt. Lemon Scenic Byway for more than 40 years. It has been improved so much, I hardly remember the bad old days. The road is a joy to travel now - and 100% more safe. When it is hot in Tucson - it's hot. In just 30 minutes, one can take a drive that takes you through 7 different plant life zones and 20 degrees in temperature or more. I know of nowhere else where one can go to broiling desert to cool, pine-scented tall, tall trees in half an hour! Or in the Winter from Skiing to shorts.

The drive is short from Tucson. At 8000 feet up, it's cooler and when I need my 'mountain' fix I like going up there. There are several restaurants and good hiking, so shake the dust off your shoes and enjoy the great outdoors!

We spent a wonderful couple of hours driving the scenic byway up and then down Mt. Lemmon. Each twist and turn opened up new vistas, with frequent places to park for longer looks or hikes. Windy point was especially interesting, with lots of boulders to climb. It was amazing to watch the landscape, and the temperature, change as the altitude did, from cactus and scrub to huge pine forests at the ski resort near the summit town of Summerhaven.
