Hard to believe you can escape the AZ heat in an hour drive up the mountain! There's restaurants, a ski lift, snowing in the winter ( yes really!), you can camp, fish in the stocked lake, bring your RV too. Roads are well mantained but curves abound. A wonderful weekend escape. There are also rental cabins available. During the summer there are concerts on the mountain...great break from our heat and monsoons. Walking in the pines....blue skys, clean air... all high above the Tucson deserts! A must see for vistors to Tucson!

Yes, it is corny but true. Our family heads for Mt. Lemmon and the road that leads to it. Over the 26 or better miles you see the scenery change from desert to lush mountain meadows. And along the way you can see out over the valley to the East and New Mexico and West towards Tucson and Kitt Peak which also is a cool place to go.

What is nice about the highway, is the full turnouts which let you stop and view the scenery. Some spots have signs about what you are seeing. I have included several. Take your time and enjoy the change of scenery and weather.

This is a very scenic drive with options to take short stops along the way and take in the beauty. There are many hiking options, including starting from the top of Mt Lemmon and taking a few days to hike down.

If you are not a hiker, there are "pull-offs" where you can take just steps from your car and be "wowed" by the views. From the base of the mountain, it takes about 45 minutes (without stopping) to get to a quaint town called Summerhaven.

After about a 30 minute drive from the base, you can stop at Lake Rose and have a picnic lunch. A "must stop" is at Windy Point. If you enjoy rappelling, there are pitons in the wall face nearby. There is also an easy hike to get to the beginning of the rappelling experience.

Mt Lemmon offers something for everyone. Just the drive will never disappoint you.

Took my Son up Mt Lemmon after our scuba trip to San Carlos. My Son being from the Sierras in California was impressed with the different landscapes as you head up from Tucson. We enjoyed the stops along the way and had a very good lunch at Summerhaven.
A nice day trip to escape the valley heat as Mt Lemmon is always cooler than the desert below :).
