“Breathtaking”

Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway
Ranked #4 of 307 things to do in Tucson

This is a beautiful drive just outside of Tucson. It was still cold, but the snow had almost all melted at the top. There is a pull out about 1 hour up that is a great place to get out and scramble over the rocks. You can't miss the pullout with all the parking and a rest stop. The drive is a little scary for the faint of heart, but there are nearly always guard rails. At the top at the ski resort is a quaint restaurant with great soups, warm drinks, and pie. It closes early (I think 4:30), but feels like a great reward for the drive up! I love this drive, and would place it as one of the most beautiful I have ever taken.

This is close to Sabino Canyon and therefore you can do both in one trip. We did not go to the top of the mountain, but the views from near the bottom are still very good.

The drive up to Mt. Lemmon is a nice scenic drive that takes you from the desert to the spruce forests in 25 miles. There are very good interpretive signs and pull-puts along the way that explain the local features. The stop and signs at the former Japanese interment camp from WWII were well done. There are no services along the way and only a couple of restaurants on top, so fill up the gas tank.

We took a drive up to the top of Mt. Lemmon with family visiting us in Tucson. There were so many spectacular lookouts as we climbed up to 9100 feet, from the desert floor to the ski lifts at the top. It showed a wide range of ecosystems, from a world of cacti to aspens and pine trees. Highly recommended!

The drive on the Mt. Lemmon Byway in the Santa Catalina Mountains is a nice diversion from the desert area of Tucson. The two-lane road winds up the mountain to an elevation of about 8600 feet. There are plenty of scenic pull-off to get good pictures. The scenery changes from Saguaro Cacti to Pine Trees as you approach the higher elevations. There is a ski area on top but they have not had snow all winter. Dine at the Iron Door Cafe for a great dining experience.
