Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway
Ranked #4 of 309 things to do in Tucson

50 miles round trip to upper picnic/trail heads & small town. You get to see all the different mountain growth as you ascend- cactus to tall pine. Plenty of pulloffs to take pictures several w/restrooms. Rose Canyon lake requires entrance fee- quite hefty $9/car and they do not accept Golden Age pass nor do they honor the Sabino Canyon tickets as we were told they admitted us to the Mt Lemmon area. Women at the gate said the fee was for camping, site use- payable even tho you were just sightseeing?? Visitor center is closed on Tues/Wed (we were Tuesday travelers)- disappointing and why closed?? Obama thing?? Despite those hiccups the road is safe, well maintained and scenic- just be prepared to pull over now and then for the impatient idiots that have to speed wherever they drive- even at 8000'.

We drove up to the top of Mt. Lemmon and visited the ski area and the village of Summerhaven. On the way down, we stopped at one of the trailheads and took a hike into the desert. Mt. Lemmon is much cooler that Tucson, so unless it's mid summer, you may want to take a jacket. Mt. Lemmon a nice escape from the Tucson heat.

We drove slowly up Mt. Lemmon stopping to take in the views and the changing biomes. It was a spectacular drive with many impressive vistas and rock formations. You start at the desert level and at the top reach the pine forest. It was a great drive on a hot day in Tucson. We took some short walks to view the vegetation and vistas. We ate lunch at a very pleasant cafe near the top.
Highly recommend it!

Right now, escaping from the heat is the best reason to make this drive. You do get to see many different climates and the lookouts are nice places stop. However, since the Aspen fire a few years ago, there's not much at the top for tourists. The Oktoberfest in Sept is nice, but there's not much more than that.

Beautiful scenery from any and all vistas. At the 8000 foot elevation there is a dear little shop worth visiting... The Living Rainbow or The Caring Rainbow. Really worth a visit. the owner is as charming as her store. No need to worry about the road; it is well cared for and has guardrails all the way . Breathtaking and such a short distance from Tucson.
