Mexican seafood! Offers very unique menu. Fish, octopus, shrimp in a variety of dishes and sauces. Simple atmosphere.

“South of the border seafood in Tucson, AZ”
Reviewed January 9, 2009

like many good authentic mexican restaurants in the US, this restaurant looks nothing like our idea of a mexican restaurant (adobe, cacti, sombreros, etc). instead, it has the look of a convenience store turned restaurant (big windows, flourescent lighting, plain tables, etc).

but walk inside and the bright sea murals and leather seats on the wooden straight back chairs are your first indication that you are in for something special. oh, and the wonderful smell that greets you before you open the door!

the menu is all seafood, in many variations, but especially suited to those who arent looking for the fried "captain's platter" that is so common (though they do have some fried dishes). instead, the cocktails (single type or combination), ceviche, drowned (marinated raw) shrimp, and other wonderful preparations prevail. i had never had culichi (a pablano cream sauce) style shrimp but it was absolutely fantastic. the garlic shrimp was also outstanding. the combination cocktail had so many types of seafood we had trouble identifying everything (but had fun trying!).

the only thing close to this experience that we have found was a seafood restaurant in aqua prieta, mexico that served very similar fare. if you are in tucson, and you like fresh seafood, this is one you dont want to miss. they have several locations around the city so you are sure to have one close by.

“A bit of Mexico in Tucson & worth a visit”
Reviewed May 17, 2008

We ate twice (two different locations) at this modest local chain of seafood restaurants and enjoyed both experiences very much. First, this is a local outfit catering to local folks with families, nothing fancy but all fresh, wholesome, and with a great Mexican atmosphere. Reminiscent of little palapa fish-taco joints near any seaside Mexican village. The friendly staff is bilingual, but Spanish was what we heard spoken most of the time. This isn't The Ritz - don't expect tablecloths, fancy service, etc. Do expect an interesting variety of Mexican seafood: shrimp, pulpo (octopus), oysters, etc. served any number of ways: cocktails, al mojo de ajo, diablo, ranchero, etc. Do expect a welcoming basket of fresh chips & salsa and a bowl of halved key limes while you sip a cold cerveza, iced tea or jamaica and consider your options. The shrimp cocktail (sm/med/lge) was Mexican style in a savory broth of tomato, cucumber, celery, cilantro. Small was plenty for a starter with perhaps 10-12 shrimp. I ordered shrimp ranchero, cooked to order and it came with plenty of shrimp and fresh veggies in the sauce & served with rice & fresh tortillas. And finally, don't expect to use a credit card: cash only.
