Owner description: Voted BEST OF TUCSON every year since 2002 by readers of the Tucson Weekly, The Loft Cinema is a mission-driven, membership-supported nonprofit cinema that screens new independent American and foreign films and documentaries, along with classic art films, interactive events including a monthly short film contest, sing-a-longs and cult favorites. Patrons can enjoy beer, wine, pizza, tamales along with fantastic films. The main theatre seats 500 people and boasts the largest screen in Southern Arizona. In addition to our regular programming, The Loft hosts an annual international film festival in the fall and a free children's film festival every July. The Loft is a member of the Sundance Institute's Art House Project, based on our excellence of programming and service to the community. In 2012 The Loft was selected to be an official venue of the Sundance Film Festival in their Sundance USA program and we have hosted a screening direct from Sundance with the filmmakers every year since. The Loft is one of 7 American cinemas to be a collaborating partner with Film Forward: Advancing Cultural Dialogue in 2012, an honor The Loft also enjoyed in 2011.

“community cinema”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2013

I'm truly grateful the Loft exists and that it turned itself from a private, decrepit, ancient and run-down (but still charming) theater into a non-profit, community-based organization that shows great films! The old Loft had location and a great building going for it but was not a money-maker. The people who turned it into a non-profit have done amazing things. They spruced up the building and seating considerably; food and drink offerings are better than any other in town, there are plenty of good flicks available, the staff (including a lot of volunteers) are friendly and helpful, and the community events are creative. The films are a little more expensive than a standard, corporate theatre but for the ambience it's well worth it.

I see films there I wouldn't seek out & there are FREE movies once a month for the art-film lover. The themes (for example, they showed a series of Stanley Kubrick's work, and we went to a show last year, "Night of the Iguana", that was part of a series of Tennessee Williams-based movies), are terrific. Also went once to "Mondo Mondays" which involves schlocky horror or sic-fi with plenty of audience participation. They also have a lot of kid-friendly events, cult movie showings, sing-a-longs, and so forth. The program director usually gets up and gives a speech (or spiel) to promote the film, with plenty of background information. Very entertaining guy who manages to be both intelligent and non-threatening.

Can't say enough good things about the Loft but will admit it's not for everyone. You have to be thoughtful and have some appreciation for films, and willing to pay a little extra.

Have been to the Loft many times and it never disappoints. People there are very friendly. The sound and picture was good, they have healthy snacks available for purchase. Highly recommend!

“You Can't Beat the Off-Beat Offerings of Movies or the Beer”

This is one of the few truly ma'n'pa entertainment venues left in Tucson and the only place I know of where you can have access to alcohol while watching a movie. They show foreign, independent and deliciously off-beat movies here. (Check out the colored toilets in the women's bathroom, if you can. Fun!) The Loft is a Tucson treasure.

“A very funky place”

The Loft has been one of my favorite places to visit so far in Tucson. Employees are extremely friendly and the seats are very comfortable! Enjoying a glass of wine and organic popcorn during a movie is always a plus as well...
