My friends and I visited Sabino Canyon while staying in Oro Valley for a longer weekend. This is an excellent day trip. I agree with other reviews: very busy, parking lot was full (we managed to catch a car leaving), no wildlife sightings but endlessly interesting scenic views, lots of hiking options. So peaceful and calm.

We took the tram up to the last stop/#9, and walked back on the paved roads. The tram operator must dream about the tour narrative, which was clearly articulated, audible, and very informative. Tram drivers are very skilled going over those narrow bridges. The tram has covered and uncovered seating; uncovered seating trails behind and is better for unobstructed views, and we didn't get any diesel fumes.

I recommend going early in the day to beat the heat; bring lots of water. Not an especially long walk back, with the option of catching the tram on any of the stops on the way down or up (keep your ticket handy). Unless you love an uphill challenge and are pretty fit, I would take the tram from stop #1 back to the center. Keep note of the timing...trams run every half hour....so if you just saw one go by, you might have to wait a little.

I have to admit I was a bit mystified about why this place ranks so high in the Tucson area, but after going there I now understand why. It's an absolutely beautiful place, with great hiking trails and the most beautiful scenery anywhere in the area. Honestly, this should be the location of Saguaro National Park. And since it's federal land, I'm not sure why it isn't. You can't really spend more than a couple hours or so at either the east or west side of Saguaro National Park, but you can easily spend several days exploring Sabino Canyon. It has more cacti, more mountains, more water, and more wildlife than the national park. Unfortunately it also has more people. In fact, it has a LOT more people, so that's definitely a drawback. But once you visit, you'll understand why it's so popular. In short, don't miss it when you're in Tucson.

The Sabino Canyon is a gorgeous place, and whether you are a hiker or not, it's a must-see. They have a shuttle that takes you to the top, and you can get on and off at various stops. We took a picnic lunch and enjoyed it at the 6th stop (there are nine in total). We had people in the group that didn't walk well so being able to see the sights from the shuttle was great.

Sabino is a great stop while in the Tucson area. The tram info is nice while you go up. We saw lots of birds, great mountain views of saguaro, prickly pear, fishhook barrel, ocotillo (in bloom) cacti, and a rattlesnake while at Sabino. The water was not very strong at this time of year (April 1). Staff in the information center were helpful in planning our hike.

We recommend that you arrive by 10 AM and take the shuttle up the canyon which is long and filled with saguaro cacti. Hiking can be a lot of fun there.
