“Great scenery if you are willing to hike”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

Catalina State Park is located just outside of Tucson. The park features camsites and ample picnic facilities, plus some very interesting hiking trails.

There are bathroom facilities and a small ice cream stand/souvenir shop located at the trailhead. For those seeking some low-key exercise, The Romero Ruin, Nature, and Birding Trails offer short, level walks. Most hikers head up into the mountains - we took the popular walk up to the Romero Pools. There is plenty of elevation gain and the trails are not maintained to National Park standards. At times one must scramble up boulders, so be prepared for this. Experienced and physically fit hikers can push on further into the mountains.

The spectacular view of the valley below is the reward for this physical exertion. We also met several very pleasant fellow hikers along the trail.

“Challenging hikes!”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

We did the hike to Romero Pools. Starts out flat but eventually switchbacks with rocks and loose rocks. The trail also curves around and you see a waterfall at one point. Do not panic! That is not where you are hiking too! Start early as the trail gets busy. We started about 8:30 a.m. and met a few people already headed back. We had the pools to ourselves for about 15 minutes.

“Lots of places to walk and hike”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Even though it costs to get in, its well worth it. You have your pick of short or long walks or hikes. The best part is they sell ice cream at the trail head. After going to the Romero Pools and back, I deserved and enjoyed that ice cream!
