Catalina State Park is located just outside of Tucson. The park features camsites and ample picnic facilities, plus some very interesting hiking trails.
There are bathroom facilities and a small ice cream stand/souvenir shop located at the trailhead. For those seeking some low-key exercise, The Romero Ruin, Nature, and Birding Trails offer short, level walks. Most hikers head up into the mountains - we took the popular walk up to the Romero Pools. There is plenty of elevation gain and the trails are not maintained to National Park standards. At times one must scramble up boulders, so be prepared for this. Experienced and physically fit hikers can push on further into the mountains.
The spectacular view of the valley below is the reward for this physical exertion. We also met several very pleasant fellow hikers along the trail.
