Great place to learn about the Sonoran Desert! Visit both districts: eastern (Rincon) and western (Tucson Mt.). Both have visitor centers with informative films. Both also have loop drives with many spots to stop, hike or take photos.
We took a ranger led hike "Desert Discovery" (2 easy miles over 2 hours) from the Rincon visitor center and learned lots. Ranger pointed out things we had walked by previously and never noticed! Over all a must if you are interested in the natural surroundings!

Yep, it's a lot of cactus, but there is wildlife and birding if you look close enough, and some fantastic sunsets. I regret that while we came here twice we did both times at sunset. I would really love to see what is out and about during the daytime.
Seems a little under appreciated for some of the vistas, panoramas, and wildlife you get to experience here. Maybe it's because it is something I don't get to see every day, but I loved it.

The Saguaro cacti tower above the scrub brush as if they are sentinels. Beautiful and serene. I did not expect to see them going up the side of the mountains. We admired their uniqueness.

The drive to the visitors center was magnificent. It gave us an appreciation of the Arizona desert vegetation. I have never seen so many different types of cactus. There are several excellent, well maintained hiking trails, but we did not take advantage of them. The visitor center gave us a good idea of what to see and the best place to see it. There is a short trail outside the visitor center where you can see and get information on some of the vegetation in the area on various signs along the way. This is a nice stop along the way to Tucson and it's free.

The ~8 mile drive is fantastic. Give yourself a few hours because there are trails along the way that you can hike. There are also picnic areas with convenience rooms. Beautiful views. Wonderful geology. Spectacular saguaros. If you climb Javelina Rock you can see the fault line.
