We stopped by on our way from Phoenix to Houston. We saw the signs and decided to make a little side trip. This is a great place, excellent views of the countryside and mountains. We got some wonderfull photos and did a lot of star gazing. We will visit again for sure.

A short trip up Gates pass to the west of downtown Tucson and you escape from suburban southwest metropolis into sublime sonoran desert vistas, detailed with 200 year old Saguaros, rocky outcroppings, intriguing stone huts, challenging hikes and casual off rode walks. We have stayed in the campground a few times- no shade in the summer, but a pleasant out of town respite from October through April. BE ALERT TO ROAD BICYCLISTS as Gates' Pass is a popular and challenging route for bikes with dangerous steep curves and climbs shared with the automobile traffic.

You can hike into this park, and two minutes in, you feel like the only person on the planet! One caution...take a partner, and take plenty of drinking water!

This is a great place to take out of town visitors. It's FREE and only a short drive from anywhere in Tucson. Older people can take in the view from the roadside area and children can hike to the top of the huge A to see the sights from there. You have a perfect view of Downtown Tucson and the Catalina Mountians. Don't forget your camera. You will want to take pictures while you're there.
