The restored interior is awe inspiring. I've always loved going to "the Mission" and my recent visit was no exception. A visit to Tucson is not complete without a visit to San Xavier.

The mission is one of the oldest and most unique in the southwest. As our docent pointed out, the Patronato of the mission are not trying to restore it but to maintain it in it’s antiquity. So, the façade, though still beautiful, show the weathering of the centuries. The interior artwork has been cleaned of the soot from fires built by parishioners inside the sanctuary to warm themselves during the winter. Anyone who likes history and folk-art will love San Xavier.

I went with some friends to this Mission. The church building is very beautiful inside and out. We were there in March so the weather was pleasant. There are several gift shops on the property that have many hand made items for sale. I believe that most if not all of the hand made items are made by native Americans. My friends and I enjoyed browsing all of the shops and looking at all of the beautiful things that were there. This Mission is still operating so they ask that you respect the worship times.

Mission San Xavier del Back rises out of the desert as an image of white serenity. Just drive south of Tucson on 19 (just off 10) and you will see it off to the right. Much of the interior ceiling murals have been lovingly restored and well worth seeing. Take a hike around the area, sit in quiet meditation within the sanctuary, visit the gift shop and the artist shops across the road. The tour through the property will give you some information on the area and the history of the mission as well.
