“Very charming B&B”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

Very charming B&B! We'd booked one night here and before we'de even unpacked our suitcases we decided to stay one more night. Dave and Suzannah are warm and charming, doing everything to make your stay enjoyable. Because we decided to stay one more night we had to change rooms, but both rooms were lovely, with lot of attention put into the details. Very comfortable beds as well.

We knew we had made a good choice when Dave established himself as a graduate of The Citadel and Georgia Tech and Susanna was from Greenville SC.

We had made our reservation for room 7 The Bay View based upon Tripadvisor reviews and speaking with Susanna on the phone.

The Bay View is exactly what it says it is - a view of Lubec Bay. The room is large and bright with an adequate private bath. The room as well as the rest of the inn was spotlessly clean.

Susanna provided us with an alarm clock - even though sunlight comes early in Lubec and cautioned us about relying on our smartphone alarm clocks which if they latch onto a Canadian cell tower will be on the Atlantic time zone which is an hour earlier than Eastern time.

With another Southern couple in residence Susanna served cheese grits with breakfast in our honor.

Dave gave excellent guidance on dinning pointing out that different restaurants take different days off so not all restaurants are open every day.

Spend time walking around town and don't miss West Quoddy Headlight which is nearby.

We had a wonderful stay and would return.

One caution - if you have mobility issues Room 7 The Bay View is up a steep flight of stairs then down 2 steps to another level. Breakfast was also on a lower level. If you have any doubts call Dave or Susanna.

Room Tip: If you have mobility issues call and speak to Dave or Susanna for guidance.

We actually planned our two nights of our first stay in Lubec around the only available room at the Home Port, we were that impressed with the reviews on Trip Advisor. The reasonable prices were another attraction. Our stay was all that we hoped for, and more. Susannah is a gracious hostess who made us welcome from the moment we arrived, immediately stopping prep for the next morning's breakfast and taking us on a brief tour and escorting us to our room, explaining that the rooms have no keys. After a moment of readjustment from our city ways, we never thought about keys again. That is the magic of life in the slow lane, Lubec, Maine. (Must admit we did use the deadbolt at night, though.) The bathroom has an old-fashioned tub with a shower curtain, in the same toile pattern as the bed linens, hanging from a rod mounted on the wall. There was plenty of hot water.

Room 3 was the only room available when we booked, and it had promised a glimpse of the ocean. That glimpse never failed to impress us. To step down into the room and be faced with a view of Cobscook Bay each time, no matter how small, was a wonder. The room felt very private. We loved that it had three windows facing two directions. At times we could hear musicians from the SummerKeys adult music workshops in Lubec filter through the windows of our room, adding to the magic of those foggy afternoons. We were sorry to have missed a special concert across the street from the inn on our second night...we heard it was outstanding.

Breakfast was delicious (the first morning we had a baked egg dish with some sort of shredded potato casserole that was to die for...perhaps there was sour cream in there somewhere... and the second day featured apple pancakes.) A cold breakfast is a second option. A fellow diner loved his cereal and fruit. We are somewhat reserved in new situations, but some other guests were friendly enough to introduce themselves. We met some fascinating and interesting people there because of it. The Home Port is unpretentious and comfortable, and we hope to return sometime.

We spent four days and three nights in Lubec and environs, and the Home Port Inn was a great place to return to in the evening. We stayed in the Library one night and the Garden Room the other two. Both were charming and comfortable. The breakfasts were fabulous and we availed ourselves of Suzannah and Dave's excellent taste in books during a few rain showers. We definitely want to come back again.

Room Tip: The wifi is of varying quality -- it was much better in the garden room than in the library. The gar...

My wife and I spend three nights with Suzannah and Dave, and left reluctantly. We slept in two different rooms, #4 & #5 and both the rooms and the beds were comfortable, clean and cozy. The same can be said for the downstairs communal living area. And the breakfasts were fabulous. If and when we go back to Lubec, this will be our first choice for a place to stay.

Reasons to go to Lubec: It's cool in the summer and without the masses of people; Campobello Island with the Roosevelt Park and the Head Harbour Lighthouse; nearby to Captain Andy's tours out to Machias Sea Island to see the puffins; the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse; Suzannah's breakfasts (Dave helps).

We had a 4 night stay and Dave and Suzannah were gracious host and hostess. There to enjoy hiking the Bold coast and local trails they provided a wealth of knowledge and experience that made our trip enjoyable. Breakfast meals were wonderful, and the town of Lubec was located exactly were we want to be to experience the Down East history and adventure. A must do.

After reading favorable reviews, we booked a couple of nights here last August. We stayed in the room called the Library. It was very cute, however the floor was gritty with dirt, and neither the entry door nor the bathroom door closed completely. Therefore we felt no privacy in the room, or the bathroom. Being on the main hallway in the house and to the breakfast room, there was a lot of foot traffic passing our ajar door on a regular basis. There was no way to secure our personal belongings any time we left the room. All of these problems were simple fixes that should have been solved before renting the room. The Library is in the smaller side and is probably best suited for only one person.
