My wife and I stayed at this hotel while visiting our son at Brown University. I had purchased a groupon for a junior suite but, when I called, Roy at the front desk told me that they only had a queen room available. Roy apologized and said that he'd add parking for free and promised to try to find a suite for me. Indeed, when we arrived, we were given a lovely suite, complete with a bottle of champagne chilling on the table of the living room. The suite was well furnished, elegant but comfortable. There is a sofa bed and, if you are visiting with a child to check out one of the colleges, there is plenty of room for three or even four. We stayed for two nights and breakfasted both mornings in the hotel's Aspire Restaurant, which was a wonderful way to start the day -- service, food and setting all first rate. We liked it so much, we invited our son and his girlfriend to join us -- the hotel is only about a fifteen minute walk from the Brown campus, though we took advantage of the efficient valet parking and drove to Brown, which is UP hill. The campus is only a few minutes away by car. Though my wife and I were there to see our son, we also enjoyed a romantic weekend at the Hotel Providence.
The difference between a good hotel and a great one isn't just the decor or the amenities, it is the people who work there and the staff at the Hotel Providence were always a pleasure to deal with -- Roy was a stand-out for us but everyone was cheerful and helpful and dedicated to doing their job well. We certainly hope to be back!
If you are visiting Brown, there seems to be ample unmetered parking but it is usually limited to a couple hours or so. You may have to move your car, but that is easy to do. The area around Brown is filled with lovely old houses, including the John Brown House museum. I recommend taking a stroll along Benefit, which is a charming street, to Wickenden where there are fun shops and restaurants. Also, check out the view of Providence from the Prospect Terrace off Congdon Street, west of the Pembroke campus. While we were visiting, we went to the Cable Car Cinema, an art house theater downhill from Brown, where, in addition to the usual seats, you can snuggle into couches.
