We tried Sushi, Tonkatsu, and Yakisoba. Everything tasted great, but the Sushi rice was a bit too hard. The restaurant was small and crowded, so I didn't feel very relaxed, but the food was definitely good traditional Japanese.

Haruki East hands down has the best and freshest tasting Sushi in Rhode Island. No other restaurant in the area can compare. The Tuna Crisp (not on their regular menu) is the best sushi roll I have ever eaten and often converts sushi-phobic friends! Lunch menu Bento boxes are a great value. Prices are in line with other Japanese restaurants in Providence but the service, quality and atmosphere are heads & shoulders above the rest. I highly recommend the Plum Blossom if you're looking for an adult beverage that will taste great & make you feel good fast. Perfect restaurant for a nice night out as a couple, with girlfriends, with coworkers, or even parents. I try to get everyone I know to go at least once.

It was our first time eating sushi and we certainly picked the right place! Haruki came as a recommendation and did not disappoint. The food is incredibly fresh and the wait staff are friendly and helpful. We left feeling entertained and full. Delish!

Don't get me wrong - Haruki East does not do bad sushi. The fish is acceptably fresh and the rolls are nicely made. The service is fine and the prices are quite reasonable for sushi of this quality.
However, for those who believe this restaurant is worth anything more than 3.5 stars, I would venture that you haven't ever really had excellent sushi. It doesn't have to be outrageously expensive but here are the three things that separate good sushi from the also-rans like Haruki East:
1, Really fresh fish - it looks like the only detour it took on it's way to swim to your plate was via a really sharp knife. It should look perfect. It should not have been stored wrapped in seran wrap, to protect it from the condensation of a particularly poor fish display case. It should not look like the less popular fish might have been put there and forgotten 1 - 2 days ago.
2, Top-notch service - Haruki East's service is fine, if a little slow, but their sushi chefs do not interact with diners. I believe one should be able to ask the sushi chef for their recommendation and get one, and probably not be disappointed.
3, Not too much chopping/frying - A lot of popular sushi places rely on chopped fish mixed with spicy mayonnaise, or lots of sauces, or tempura everything. Haruki East certainly fits this stereotype. It's fine as far as it goes, but I always wonder when the fish were chopped and when was the mayonnaise added?
In summary, Haruki East is really not bad. It's just not nearly as good as some reviews claim.

First, let's be clear. This is our home town. We have eaten here countless times. However we have also eaten sushi in lots of other places here and elsewhere...this is the best. Very fresh; we tend to order sashimi more often than not, and the quality is unsurpassed. The temperature, the texture are perfect. They offer mutsu (black marlin), while very few other places do. The seaweed salad is consistently perfect. The miso soup is also.
The quality of food is always foremost in our minds, but we are also wowed by the service. We have become well-acquainted enough with certain wait-staff for them to actually get excited to see us, and to exchange hugs. We have sent a letter to the restaurant to thank them for the quality food and service they offer, mentioning our favorite waitress in particular.
