Owner description: WaterFire Providence is an independent, non-profit arts organization whose mission is to inspire Providence and its visitors by revitalizing the urban experience, fostering community engagement and creatively transforming the city by presenting WaterFire for all to enjoy. This award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence, has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a moving symbol of Providence’s renaissance. WaterFire’s over eighty sparkling bonfires, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the arched bridges, the silhouettes of the firetenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the enchanting music from around the world engage all the senses and emotions of those who stroll the paths of Waterplace Park. WaterFire has captured the imagination of over ten million visitors, bringing life to downtown, and revitalizing Rhode Island’s capital city.

Yes, it's basins of fire along the river. BUT, it's more than that--it's the music, the theme, the people attending. If it's a very busy weekend in Providence, the crowds can make it difficult to actually see it from many vantage points. But if it isn't, it's a spectacle that seems to work even after seeing it several times.

for all who visit Providence. A city take on the small-town paseo or paseo or passeggiata, built around what amounts to a large site-specific art installation. The WaterFire team is especially good at curating obscure mood music--Ukrainian opera?

Hard to describe what this is all about. There is really nothing to do but watch the water/fire/people. Lovely music with quite a ritual surrounding the lighting of the water torches.
Walking along the river we passed under a bridge. To my delight there was a chandelier hanging along the walkway under the bridge. Magical. If you need fast action sports or high tech entertainment this may not be for you. Old fashioned, free, in a lovely setting. Perfect for a warm summer eve.

It's especially nice to go with a significant other or even alone. Such a calm, intimate experience with the candles and relaxing music and people everywhere all walking around, very nice. There plenty of food vendors and little places to shop, there's also portable bathrooms.

Hauntingly beautiful and serene. In spite of the large number of people there, all were subdued and peaceful due in part to the lovely music played. Go on a chilly night, find a spot to sit and be comfortable and just take in the peacefulness. Under a. Ridge is a special place to be. Would recommend this event when in RI.
