We stayed at Valhalla July 4th weekend. This was our 3rd trip to Estes, but first with our kids, ages 6 and 10, so I extensively researched every "family friendly" place to stay, and Valhalla came out on top. My husband and I were so glad we booked here. This is the kind of place that I remember going to on vacations as a kid. Aside from checking out a couple of (free) dvd's from the office one night, the tv, video games, and the like sat silent all week. My boys were just too busy playing shuffleboard, ping pong, mini-golf, tetherball, swimming, climbing on the playground, or riding their bikes. We live in a busy city, so they *loved* the quiet and open spaces to run around with no traffic or noise. Bonus was the 100+ elk herd that wandered through on our last day. Amazing to see!
We stayed in Cabin 6, which I found perfect for us. This cabin is located directly across from the pool and game room, with a view of all the activities, so you can take a break on the deck and still watch the kids play. I've read complaints on other reviews that the cabins are outdated, and in some ways, they are. However: our cabin was spotless, came with everything we needed for the week (fully equipped kitchen), and you cannot beat the price for what you're getting. On their site, they describe cabin 6 as "small" but if you check the square footage, it's actually larger than some of the "medium" sized cabins. Kitchen and living room are open plan, which I loved, and good-sized bathroom with a tub. Bedrooms are very tiny (really, only fit the bed) but we only slept in them at night, so not an issue. Huge deck, parking for 2 cars. We came during the wildfires, so a fire ban was in place, including charcoal grills. When we arrived there was a gas grill on our deck that looked new. Very thoughtful of the owners.
What more can I say? This is the most detailed review I've written on tripadvisor, but with everything to do in town and the Park, and Valhalla, my kids are dying to go back. We take a family vacation somewhere new every year for the past 10 years, but this will probably be the one place we return to next summer. We were that pleased.
