On my numerous trips to perhaps my favorite location in the world, I have usually made sure to stay right in Estes Park. The charms of this wonderful village, to us are almost equal to the majestic mountains themselves, and we prefer being able to just park at our accommodations and have direct walking access to the shops, restaurants and pubs.
For many stays I had chosen the "Silver Moon Inn"; a great place, with a good staff and a four minute walk to everything Estes, BUT...I couldn't help but notice the last time I was preparing a get-away, their rates had gotten a little high for my comfort. After looking at other options, we narrowed it down to Misty; mostly due to it's location and reasonable rates.
Let me second what every reviewer has said (even the few negative ones agree)..the family that owns and operates this are GREAT, and immediately make you feel like family (the office has a marker board that publicly welcomes all the check ins for the day by name; a nice touch.) They are helpful, friendly and informative.
This is a facility that is nestled with its back against some scenic bluffs, and the front yard faces the village..it is no more than a two minute walk to town, and yet it's location still has a "nestled away" feel. This is NOT for you if you insist on new modern 4 star type luxury. This is obviously an older motel that the family owners have made some very nice updates too. Our bathroom (Unit 3) was very snug (but had been updated with nice sink and shower facilities); but for two adults; it was adequate. The rooms are decorated in the predictable cabin/rustic feel; nice enough. Bed was comfortable for us; but I could see how some would find it maybe a little 'hard' for their tastes. A big plus was a separate complete kitchen with full fridge, stove, microwave, dishes, utensils. Nice fireplace (we never used it); free wifi; all in all we were very happy with it at a rate one third less than my previous choice. Warning: rooms are NOT made up on a daily basis (we actually like that; we never had to plan are comings and going around maid service), but clean towels are always available at the office. No pool, but two hot tubs. Their newest one has got a privacy wall built around it...but we preferred the longer hike to their original smaller tub elevated on a raised deck, with spectacular views of the mountains and the village below.
This first visit was in late September 11, and we have booked for August '12. We highly recommend Misty Mountain Lodge. It is not fancy, but it is clean, comfortable, with a friendly feel; and the location is perfect.
