“Breathtaking views, pleasant staff, quaint little room at the Sunday House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2010

We made a last minute reservation at the Amberwood for a couple of days, including New Year's Eve (Dec 31, 2009). The management was so polite to talk to over the phone, easygoing - like talking to a family member! Same when we actually arrived - they weren't in when we got in, so they just left the key for us and allowed us to check in at a time of our convenience later. We came up to spend our anniversary (yup, we flew to Colorado and didn't have a place to stay for our anniversary), and initially thought we might be disappointed in the "Sunday House" as that was the only thing available (versus the individual cabins). We thought, "well, we'll make the best of it and just use it as basecamp for winter hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park anyway!" Wow, did we underestimate this place! It is charming, and I would love to stay again - and definitely want to stay in one of the little cabins. Our Sunday House room wasn't huge, but not bad sized, with a bed and a couch. Wood paneling, small bathroom, but it had a fireplace and the Amberwood provided the fuel! That was such a treat! There was at least one other couple staying in the Sunday House, but we never heard them once we were in our room. Opening the door in the morning was a really cold, but WONDERFUL experience - the view out the front porch (oh yea, there's a cute little porch that runs the length of the house with chairs outside each room) was just gorgeous. While we didn't see them on the property, we saw elk very near the Amberwood and saw pics of elk and other wildlife on the premises. Prices were also really good - and their website shows accurate prices, photos, etc. We've already shared about this place with friends who live in the Denver area. We are heading back to this area in the spring, and would like to stay here again!

We found this place years ago, when at the last minute our plans changed and we needed somewhere to stay. Since then we make a yearly return. We don't expect or need a 5-star resort, we just want a reasonably priced room, near the Park and also the town, and this fits perfect.

This year we experienced a large black bear which wandered through Amberwood one morning, and in the past had elk go through. I would recommend this place to anyone except those who need to feel pampered.

Over the past year and a half we have stayed in this wonderful hideaway. We have had the pleasure to stay in the Hollyhock House, the Poppy House, and the Honeymoon House. The staff is always ready to fill any need we may have and do it with a smile. Future plans are to stay in the Mountain Home with friends from Fort Worth. Can't Wait!

Our family stayed in the "mountain home" cabin at Amberwood over the elk festival. The property owners were extremely polite and helpful and the cabin was meticulously spotless! If we are ever in the area again we would choose amberwood.

This place is PURE HEAVEN!!! Just 5mins away from the Estes Park hub, it's adequately secluded but quite accessible to the post office, restaurants, gift shops, hiking trails and more. The owner and staff are very friendly and accommodating but they also respect one's privacy as needed. There's a playground for kids but adults can also tap the child in them in the swings, slide and sand box. The cabin is clean and well maintained at no extra charge. Elk roam around freely and the vista is breathtaking! We vow to rent a cabin here every year after such an awesome experience!

After reading so many positive reviews, I was really surprised at the Grand Lodge. I was expecting a cozy, relaxing retreat, and instead, could not wait to go home. It was so disappointing to be in beautiful nature and hear non-stop traffic noise.

Rooms:
-Tiny with barely any room for suitcases (if you have a sleeper sofa, you have to arrange it sideways just to use it and cannot access one side of the room)
-Beds are not comfortable
-Two downstairs bedrooms have no windows
-Upstairs rooms have really small private bathrooms with no place to put a toiletry case besides the top of the toilet.

The grand room has horrible fluorescent lighting and wall-to-wall green carpet that would be so much better if it were wood flooring.

The layout of the bathrooms is strange. Upstairs there are two bedrooms with private bathrooms, so you have to walk through someone's bedroom to access it. Downstairs has three bedrooms without private bathrooms, but two side by side bathrooms instead.

An outside fire pit would be a great addition.

RMNPOK, Manager at Amberwood, responded to this review, September 28, 2010
We did not know this guest was unhappy. The believe the person making the review was not the one who made the reservation but one of the 22 folks attending the gathering. Evidently this person did not research our place like the one who made the reservation.
We have a full description of amenities on our web site including number of bedrooms and number of bathrooms plus pictures of the inside and outside of the Lodge including bedrooms and the 4 bathrooms. We have had Amberwood for 38 years and have had no complaints about the lighting or beds. We upgrade mattresses periodically and we have fan lights across the ceiling with individual slider switches. We also have fluorescent lights built into the ceiling switched separately as we have scrap booking and other folks who require additional lighting. The Lodge is set back about 150 - 200 feet from the highway and we have had no complaints about road noise. I believe this person wanted a lodge with bathrooms in each bedroom and maybe a 5 star place. We are sorry she was not happy staying with us.

My wife and I along with 4 teenagers stayed at the Columbine Cabin for 4 nights and it was a great stay. The place is very well cared for with no unwelcome smells or sights...felt like a friend's cabin rather that a rental. Newly remodeled bathroom was dandy.

The owners were super nice folks and were at the ready to help with anything. This included getting us back in the cabin when we locked ourselves out! After using the charcoal grill one night for dinner, the ashes were magically gone by the next evening. And yes, we also saw the Black Bear getting into the dumpster one evening, the teens thought that was the best thing ever.

The location is a scenic road halfway between RMNP and the somewhat over-busy Estes Park town. Perfect for our daily excursions into the park. I guess my only complaint was the lack of more (or larger windows) int the cabin. This made it hard to bring in the cool night air (after the warm afternoons heated up the place) and you can't see the beautiful outdoors as easily as you might like. But, I would retun since this was a great value and very well run.
