One suggestion: get there early! If you are in town for a few days, try to find the day that is clearest and plan to get there just as they open. One tram goes up, one tram comes down. There is a limit as to how many can fit at once, so you really need to budget your time to get down if you have somewhere else you need to be.
Yes, you can buy peanuts at the top. Yes, the chipmunks are friendly. Yes, your kids will get bored of this after about 5 minutes. One bag to share is plenty.
The shop at the top is sparse, to say the least. There is a collection of t-shirts and souvenirs, but nothing spectacular. It looks pretty dingy inside and out, so you can really avoid it altogether if you direct your kids' attention to the right (and the scenery) as you pass it.
Don't plan on buying a meal up there. . .the kitchen/ snack shop/ gift shop area smelled like old grease. Plus, the young kid who was sitting/ scowling behind the cash register looked as if he could care less if you ever ate or drank again.
If you do plan on spending time on the top (and it's gorgeous outside, so why wouldn't you?), bring your own snack and water. There is a beautiful view no matter where you look, so you might as well enjoy it!
