One suggestion: get there early! If you are in town for a few days, try to find the day that is clearest and plan to get there just as they open. One tram goes up, one tram comes down. There is a limit as to how many can fit at once, so you really need to budget your time to get down if you have somewhere else you need to be.
Yes, you can buy peanuts at the top. Yes, the chipmunks are friendly. Yes, your kids will get bored of this after about 5 minutes. One bag to share is plenty.
The shop at the top is sparse, to say the least. There is a collection of t-shirts and souvenirs, but nothing spectacular. It looks pretty dingy inside and out, so you can really avoid it altogether if you direct your kids' attention to the right (and the scenery) as you pass it.
Don't plan on buying a meal up there. . .the kitchen/ snack shop/ gift shop area smelled like old grease. Plus, the young kid who was sitting/ scowling behind the cash register looked as if he could care less if you ever ate or drank again.
If you do plan on spending time on the top (and it's gorgeous outside, so why wouldn't you?), bring your own snack and water. There is a beautiful view no matter where you look, so you might as well enjoy it!

We had a very great time in there. Everything is cool and we were able to feed a lot of the ground squirrels. Unlike what one of the reviews says. We have very great time.

The ride to the top was so beautful. The visitors center offers peanuts for sale that you can hand feed to the ground squirrels. That was the best part. They were getting ready to close for the season and only had nachos at the snack bar. Maybe keep it stocked until they actually close? That would be the only negative. The staff was great!

Wanted to get to a summit without the 3 hour hike, this was perfect!! Tram takes you up to the main area, with gift shop, feeding the chipmunks was fun for young and old alike. We broke away from the crowd and hiked on our own for about an hour. Great way to get the high altitude experience without the long hike.

We enjoyed the tram ride, but the advertisement that stated the "squirrels eat out of your hands" was not true. First of all, they are chipmunks. Second of all, they are scared of people, and only run in and out between the rocks to get the peanuts when they feel brave enough, I saw one eat from a child's hand - maybe adults are too big and scary, but kids are OK. Enjoyed seeing our hotel from above, but really, other than that, you can skip this.
