“Best of the Best”
Review of Jackson Stables

Jackson Stables
Reviewed October 4, 2017 via mobile

The Jackson Stables have always been regarded as the best around Estes Park and the area. Lots of horses for guided tours and very good hayrides are offered. Trips go into Rocky Mountain National Park and you can ride whether beginner or advanced rider. Horses for everyone.

Since beginning a new family tradition of visiting Estes Park for the past 2 years, we've incorporated a horseback ride out of the Jackson Stables on the YMCA property. We've now completed 5 rides, and it's time I left a review. First of all, the staff is extraordinary: there's not been one less than super-friendly face that we've interacted with with each visit. They ensure guests' safety and good time with ease. Secondly, the horses are amazing: not only are they well-trained and well-taken care of, they each have their own personality and charm. You can tell these horses are well-loved & respected by the staff and are not overworked. Lastly, the trails are beautiful: we've done 1, 2, and 3 hours rides and have never been disappointed. RMNP lends its beautiful scenery to the rides, and the wranglers tell great stories about the areas around the trails.

Thank you, Jackson Stables for being a must-do for our family vacations!

We did a one-hour glacier ride and the terrain was challenging. We wound through narrow paths on steep slopes and up some rocky inclines. This was not a merry-go-round pony ride. The route alternated between woodlands and open vistas with amazing views. At 4:00 pm much of the path was shaded and the temperature was comfortable. A breeze was starting to pick up and we were happy to have jackets.

The wranglers were good and selected appropriate horses for the kids and the adults who had more experience on horse back. I've done rides elsewhere where the horses seem like zombies and you might as well be riding on robots or a tram for that matter. Each of our horses had some spirit! None were difficult to manage but you felt like a participant in the ride and not just a spectator. Our 6 year old daughter had never been on a big horse before and she did just fine.

I called 3 highly rated stables and Jackson's $45/person for one hour was the best price by a bit. Don't forget to factor in a tip too. There were a couple of reminders around the stable.

Note that a 2 hour ride is less than twice the price at all stables. We were tempted to take a longer ride to get "more for our money" but are glad we didn't. After one hour everyone ended happy (wife, 6 yo and 8 yo) and just starting to get sore bottoms. I think the extra-hour would have ended cranky and uncomfortable and maybe taken the shine off the experience.

Our wrangler tried to give us some history but it was slightly windy and hard to hear. I was happy to just enjoy the experience, but if you want to ask questions and know more, ask to be at the front of the line.

For kids - this is located on the YMCA of the Rockies camp grounds. If your kids are too young to ride, they also offer hayrides in a wagon behind cart horses. We arrived early and played on a playground for a while. There is also a pool there but I don't know what the rules for access are.

Our family went on the two hour Moraine Park ride. The variety of scenery and terrain was great. The horses were gentle and easy to ride. Our 8 year old daughter was riding for the first time and she was nervous! The wranglers were supportive without matching her level of drama. The wrangler leading our ride kept our daughter at the head of the line, and they chatted the whole two hours (well, my daughter chatted, the wrangler listened! haha ). Be advised, they do encourage tipping your wrangler. There was no pressure to tip, but there were signs up telling you to tip if you enjoyed your ride. We all had a great time, and my daughter can't wait to ride again.

My son and I did a 2 hour ride in Moraine Park with Jackson Stables. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Colorado! The staff were professional and informative about the ride and the area. The two hour ride included lots of terrain, some quite steep, and lots of trotting, which we loved. Others in our group were not expecting that so I would strongly encourage you to ask questions. A wonderful experience would not hesitate to recommend.
