“Motel Rooms, but Beautiful Views!”
Reviewed August 23, 2008

I stayed at the YMCA of the Rockies, Deer Ridge Lodge for 5 days, 4 nights. The first room given to me was horrible, spiders, spider webs, things smeared on the wall, ripped carpet, and it smelled like a locker room. I complained and was given a handicap room (all they had left) which was clean and suitable. It was not like staying at a hotel, it was more like a run down motel in my opinion. However, the atmosphere at the YMCA of the Rockies is great, so many things to do, and beautiful! Since I spent very little time in my room it wasn't a big deal, I had beaitufl weather all week. I plan to go back next year but pay a bit more and stay in an actual hotel and not the East Lodge!

  • Liked — Complete and quick access to everything going on at the YMCA of the Rockies and surrounding area
  • Disliked — I had expected more than a "motel" room like setting and I quickly found you have to walk everywhere

We stayed at the YMCA of the Rockies for four days and had a great time. We have a family with five young boys, and our room had a queen bed and two sets of bunk beds, so we were able to use just one room. The rates are reasonable, the accomadations were fine. If you're used to 5 star hotels, this is probably not for you. Tons of activities in the area. Lots of daily programs for kids of all ages, as well as adults, through the YMCA and other vendors. Beautfiul location, as the Rockies surround you, and yet you're five minutes from town.

My husband's family booked a reunion here because they had often stayed at this Y camp in the 1960s and 1970s. They certainly won't be staying there again.

We arrived at noon, hoping to get the three cabins ready for everyone's arrival. Check-in, it turned out, didn't begin until 3:00, and the cleaning crew were so far behind that we weren't given our keys until 6:00. As it turned out, our cabins were at the far edge of the camp, a ten-minute drive up steep and winding dirt roads. There was no hope of taking part in any activity in the main part of the camp or getting together with the family members staying in the lodge (or returning to our cabin for a meal or to retrieve a sweater) without driving; we probably spent as much time in the car as we did anywhere else. Not that we'd have wanted to spend more time in our cabin: eight beds were jammed into three small bedrooms, the bathroom would have fit nicely into a Boeing 727, and the camp provided none of the basics we've found elsewhere--no paper towels, no salt, no matches, no flashlight. And no views either.

The day camps for kids were full--we weren't warned that we would have to book months in advance, before we'd even seen the place--and the (indoor) pool was constantly closed, so there was little for our four-year-old and six-year-old to do. Pony ride? $12 for twenty minutes. Mini golf? Sure, but the course has no seating in the shade, and the nearest bathroom is a fifteen-minute hike up a hill. Snacks? The worst sort for sale at the activity center: not the granola bars and trail mix or at least marginally healthy treats you might expect but candy bars and assorted junk. Like to try the new zip line? Then be ready to get up at 6:00, stand in line for an hour until the sign-up sheet is made available, and maybe, just maybe, you'll get on the list to go two days later.

All that, and dirty clothes, too: when we went to the front desk to find out where the laundry room was, we were told that it was closed for two weeks, this at the height of the summer season.

My daughter stayed for one night at this YMCA. She came home covered with bed bug bites. We brought the matter to the attention of management and hope they do something about it. Meanwhile, check your beds, the carpet, and the room in general before staying.

We had heard how convenient the YMCA was to the National Park and that it had terrific views. This is both certainly true, however what was not told to us is the fact that for $144 per night, we got something similar to a boys dorm room, complete with musty odors and cleanliness to match!! No AC ( it was 93) and no TV. The place was noisy and is probably fine for a youth group of some kind where teens are too busy running around to take in the finer details of the lodging, but for a family situation such as ours, it simply didn't work. The place felt "grungy".
When we checked out an hour later after checking in, we were told that they would have to keep our $100 deposit. What ever happened to " satisfaction guaranteed?" The entire place needs to be rennovated in our opinion...especially at the prices they charge. We won't be back....I don't care how great their location is. For a few more dollars you can stay at a number of fine places down the road that actually make you feel like you're on vacation and not spending the night at a frat house!!

Let me first start by saying the location is absolutely perfect. It is the perfect centralized location for exploring RMNP and for exploring downtown Estes Park. What I was not prepared for was the overall outdated feel of the resort. After checking out the dining areas we immediately concluded that we would be eating off property or fixing our own meals in the cabin. Our one and only incident that led us to that conclusion was when we purchased a pre-made salad and I discovered a dead fly inside. We stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin and loved the size and location of the cabin. It was off the "main" area and we very much appreciated the quiet. The cabin was very spacious and well furnished. The furnishings are not at all current but it met our needs. The brochure said it as a kitchenette but I would classify it as a full sized kitchen (stove, microwave, full-size fridge, coffee maker, dishwasher and toaster). We were a family of 4 but the cabin slept 5. The activities were ok. Bingo was fun, kickball was ok, nature hike my 10 year old daughter really enjoyed. We also paid extra for the two hour horseback ride which was awesome and we did whitewater rafting with the tour company that the YMCA recommended. Both of those paid activities were lots of fun and woth the extra money! IThe staff at both locations were very helpful and nice! I think my biggest disappointment has to be with check-in and with the arts and crafts area. Check-in was a nightmare and no one seemed to know anything. Instead of immediately handing us a pager and telling us that it would probably be after 5:00 before our cabin would be ready we were told to keep checking back every hour or so. Doing that prevented us from taking any hikes or doing anything outside the immediate area. It wasn't until 3 or so that they finally gave us a pager and told us to go have fun. The staff at the arts and crafts area were less than helpful and seemed genuinely irritated most of the time! It is extremely confusing in there and is very overcrowded. My son and daughter both did a craft and I could not wait to get out of there as quickly as possible. Overall it is fine for the $ and we would probably stay there again.

This is our second year at YMCA with family from Omaha who having been coming for 19 years. The day camp programs for kids are wonderful our 4 and 5 year olds had a great time and we enjoyed relaxing and going on extended hikes while they were at camp. There is a ton to do and the facilities are well maintained. for a family vacation it is a great value. I would recommend some time to adjust to the altitude 8,000 ft. There is a fly fishing service Sasquatch Fishing which operate out of the Y and has excellent guided trips starting at $50! Truely a great destination for families and getting together from east and west location. If you want a greta rocky mountain summer experience with friends and family this would be it.
