“Amazing Place, Here's What You Need to Know”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

Here's What You Need to Know:

1. This place is IN Rocky Mountain National Park and the scenery/views are amazing.
2. There are so many activities, you will not be bored.
3. Has a resort like feel, minus the pools.
4. Has a very family camp like atmosphere.
5. The place is huge and spread out, you will need a car or you will be walking forever.
6. My experience is in one of the large family reunion cabins.
7. The craft activity area is amazing.
8. It is at high altitude, take appropriate precautions.

We rented a basic, 2 bdrm cabin for a few nights at a lower rate than most hotel rooms in Estes. Rustic, not fancy. Clean, older furnishings. Heat works great. No A/C (none needed). No TV (that's a plus). Very quiet, day and night. We cooked all meals in the kitchen, ate at the dining table or out on the deck. Our 2-year old loved the bunk beds, the forest around the cabin, the playground nearby and the crafts center where she made a necklace and painted a coffee mug, the museum, and especially the abundant elk that milled around the cabin day and night. Lots for kids to do and see, and everything is easy to walk to without dodging traffic. Not very dark at night due to streetlights, so stars are not easy to see. Lounge chairs on the porch are outstanding for mom and dad to read while the kids nap. Coffee shop in the general store is not so great. Downtown Estes and Rocky Mt National Park are both about 10 minutes away. Definitely will stay here again.

Great if you are part of a very large group or are a family who can use the cabins......terrible if you are staying in the lodges and were hoping to get some sleep.

I'm possibly biased, as I'm writing this at midnight as a wait for security to remove the group from the presentation room downstairs. Much as I have enjoyed their presentation, the applause and the cheering, I was rather hoping to get some sleep. This is my second night of almost no sleep, so my sense of humour is beginning to fail.

Room Tip: Avoid the lodges unless you are part of a large group taking the entire lodge over. If you are a so...

This was our first visit to the YMCA of the Rockies and were very impressed. With so much to do, we really felt like it had a resort-like atmosphere.

We stayed in Wind River Lodge and had a nice view; although, the way the YMCA is nestled in the Rockies, I'm not sure there's a room without a view! The only downside was that our balcony was above the smoking area. While a little older, it was clean and certainly sufficient for how little time you spend in the room.

The only thing I would NOT recommend is the dining. We had dinner at Aspen dining and for the load of money we dropped, I would have expected better. The food was mediocre at best.

And, no, there is no fitness center. There is a path outside with different stations to stop and do various exercises...and plenty of walking/hiking.

Room Tip: Select one away from the smoking area if you don't want your balcony to smell of smoke.

We had never stayed at the YMCA of the Rockies but a family member highly recommended it. They were right. We stayed in a cabin that was clean, quiet and well furnished. The location can not be beat right next to Rocky Mountain National Park. We went on day hikes that took us from the YMCA grounds into the park. One of the highlights of our trip was a group of elk that were moving down out of the mountains. They stopped on the grounds for some green grass. We got some great pictures of these majestic animals including a seven point bull. We will definitely stay again and will bring our family.

Lodges were comfortable meeting rooms were private enough to be group lounges for the entire time we were there the admin were very cooperative we were able to cater some Nepali dinners in our meeting rooms. Meals in the dinning facilities although nothing to rave about were ample.
HIKING IN THE SURROUNDING MOUNTAINS was great Even for seasoned Nepal Peace Corps
Volunteers The staff in this National Park and all of the parks we've visited, and we've been to dozens, are a national treasure. They are courteous informative and could not be more helpful in selecting and guiding folks to appropriate trails and activities-

My 9 year old daughter and I stayed 3 days over the Labor Day Weekend. Was not sure what to expect at first, but was pleasantly suprised! Great location and great views. Tons of stuff to do! We kept saying we were going to go into Estes Park to do stuff. We hardly left (once for a couple of hours) because there was already so much to do. We stayed in one of the lodge rooms. An older building, but everything worked and was clean and comfortable. We were so busy all day, we only slept in the room at night! There is a price on just about everything. But it all goes to a good cause. On the down side, the zip line and the swimming pool were closed for maintenance when we were there. And the food in the dining hall was marginal at best for the price we had to pay. But, I would definately stay there again and try one of the cabins.
