“Iron Fisted, Rude Rangers”

What a shame. This used to be such a well run and beautiful area when owned by HP. Now that Larimer County has taken over it has become a public run nightmare. If the county wants to make budget cuts, look no farther than the Open Space Ranger Department. There are about as many rangers hanging out than there are campers.

I attended a wedding and we all stayed in the camper cabins.

Be aware: It is camping: rubber mattresses, bring your own sheets, no electricity, only propane, linoleum floors, port-a-potty outhouses outside. No showers, but you can take one in town.

Good: It was a beautiful setting in the mountains, secluded, away from the tourists of Estes Park. Very clean, tidy, easier than tent camping, just what we were looking for. The ranger was very friendly, helpful and nice.

Bad: The woman working in reception left at random hours and some guests were unable to get their keys to their cabins. She was very rude about the wedding in general and hard to work with. She really detracted from the rest of the experience.

I was hesitant to write this review, as the Hermit Park Open Space cabins are so wonderful, I almost want them to remain a well-kept secret. But I have gotten so much good info on this site, I felt I had to share.

Hermit Park offers a huge expanse of quiet and solitude. Estes Park can be very busy in the summer, and I wanted peace and quiet. I got it! I booked the Aspen cabin, which features two full-sized beds (bunks). it is completely isolated--away from everybody. There's propane, for lights, a two-burner cook stove, and a lovely pot-bellied fireplace. You can also eat outside, using the picnic table and fire pit. In July, hiking trails will be completed here. Right now, you are only allowed in on weekends, but that will change once trail construction is completed. There is so much wonderful habitat right outside your door, we didn't need to drive into town or the National Park.

I drove over to the other, larger cabins, which are perfect for families, and all are equally secluded. Oh, and each has a port-o-potty. There's no water, so fill a 5 gallon jug to bring along. I also brought a battery-operated radio/CD player for audio books at night. The library has many you can check out for evening entertainment around the fireplace.

The campground is also wonderful--great views!

The park is located just outside Estes, so if you do want to shop, dine, etc., it's an easy drive. Rocky Mountain National Park is also easy to reach.

The motels are so expensive here, I was thrilled to find this place. So there are no showers--who cares! There are showers in town, at the KOA. And, you can bring your dogs!

To book a cabin, visit the website at Larimer County (Colorado) parks and open space. (Google it, as it may change).
