Of all of the places we have stayed (b&bs and non-b&bs) in all of the places we have traveled to, Thumbelina's Cottage at Barbara's B&B is our very favorite...for these reasons:
Location: I could not imagine a more perfect location. It is a 10-minute walk to downtown Estes Park, but is so secluded. It feels like you are miles away from civilization, yet you are so close. It is a bit of a climb up the hill to get to Barbara's, but it's not bad. My wife and I look for very different things - while I like to be close to restaurants and entertainment, she always prefers to be secluded. This is really the perfect compromise.
Amenities: Barbara has thought of everything. The mini-fridge is always fully stocked with alcohol and other beverages. Our first visit was over our first anniversary weekend, and we were thrilled to find champagne (and flutes!). There are also snacks to take on hikes, as well as a keurig with pretty much every kind of pod you could want. The cottage is so incredibly cozy, thanks to the beautiful rugs, king-sized bed with an electric blanket, and very powerful heater. During our second visit, there was snow on the ground and it was rather chilly. It was great to come home after a day of hiking and shopping outside to a warm cottage! The best part is the hot tub - it is shared, but is right outside of Thumbelina's Cottage. It's very secluded, but is a great place for wildlife watching. The views from the hot tub are incredible. Again - a great compromise for my wife, who loves wildlife, and me (I LOVE hot tubbing).
Breakfast: Words cannot even begin to express how incredible Barbara's breakfasts are! She cooks an insane amount of food, and it is all so delicious. Barbara makes great blueberry pancakes, omelets, casserole, smoothies...and so many other things. We generally don't even have room for lunch after Barbara's breakfasts. My wife enjoys bird watching over breakfast - there are windows and wonderful views on all sides of the dining room. And Barbara knows so much about all of the birds that visit her deck.
Wildlife: I have already addressed this in the other sections, but this is a great place to see wildlife. There are deer, bunnies, and birds all over, and although we haven't seen any yet, we have heard many stories about bears and mountain lions visiting Barbara's.
Hostess: I saved the best for last! Barbara is such a wonderful, selfless hostess. She provides more than we ever can even imagine wanting - from the huge breakfasts to the personal touches all over the room, we are always more well taken care of than we expect to be. Our first visit, I was studying for the bar. We scheduled our second visit over the weekend that ended up being the weekend of the flood. Barbara called me to touch base and see if we wanted to reschedule. Before I could even ask her how she was holding up and how much damage she had sustained, she told me that she was dying to know how the bar went and told me she had been thinking about me. I couldn't believe how sweet and selfless she was - and how kind she was after only meeting us once.
We can't imagine staying anywhere else in Estes! I just wish that Barbara had a B&B in all of the places we travel - we would always stay with her.
