After the locals told us about this road, we decided to give it a try. If you are anywhere near Crescent City, CA.....go drive down this road.
Words cannot express the dynamic experience you will have.....
Drive SLOWLY....windows up (dirt road).....
Do the hikes.....drive out the back way...and have lunch/dinner at the little diner on Hwy. 97. (Sorta' old, but the hamburgers and shakes were great!)
I read something that President Johnson vetoed a bill to make this a 4 lane highway back in the day. So glad he did. Everyone needs to drive this at least once in their life. Remember though- the real beauty is off the road down the trail. The trees and bushes along the road are all covered in dirt and don't have that green lush to them. Also, remember to be courteous to opposite direction travelers and alternate going through the small areas
Tight road but well worth your drive to the red woods! Leads right into o cres city. Tight road and no trailers will fit!
Amazing beauty all around. The road is in good shape. Take your time because it's a once in a lifetime experience.
My family of 5 from NY was on vacation in the area. We wanted to hike Stout Grove but this road was closed for construction. We ended up driving to the opposite end of the road and parked at the end and walked in about 1-2 miles to the Stout Grove trail head. What a beautiful walk. Loved the portion of the road we walked on and would definitely drive it if ever in the area again.
This road was absolutely the best part of our whole Highway 101 trip. Absolutely cannot miss. Our little wimpy car did great. It is a dirt road, but absolutely passable by mid to small vehicles (no motorhomes, trailers, etc.) Mosquitos were a little heavy, but we enjoyed it from the car. Drive slow, and enjoy it.
