Drove this road in mid-September. It was very dry & dusty. Had no problem with our full size rental car. The road was narrow in places, but there is plenty of pull-off spots. Any oncomming traffic was courteous & patient. Either they or us would pull over for passing. I'd be concerned if the weather was very wet. No serious inclines to deal with.
The trees are amazing. Don't miss this drive!
We traveled up the coast of California from San Francisco, and a major objective of ours was to see the biggest of the big Redwoods/Sequoias. We were told that Jedediah Smith State Park (just south of the Oregon border) was beautiful. In fact, it exceeded that description, and we walked through a couple of different groves of Redwoods in this Park. I think it was on a par with, or better than, the Avenue Of the Giants, which was a bit south of Jedediah. I would use every superlative I know, to describe the gigantic, magnificent trees here. Give yourself the better part of a full day here, and we were glad we booked two nights in Crescent City. The road thru the Park (Howland Hill Road) is a narrow gravel road, in most places just one car wide. We stopped again and again on the road, to take pictures; and then when we arrived a the groves, we parked, and walked the loop paths through the groves. Unbelievable. Magnificent. Don't miss it.

Even with the construction, this drive was worth every second! The redwoods are just amazing. We took the short Stout Trail but it looked like any trail would be beautiful! What a way to start our visit to the park!
This was our first drive into the park, be sure to have your camera ready and take your time...we drove through twice!
Feels like a trip back to a different time. There is an eary light the permeates this old growth forest and its unique to be able to experience this from your car. The hikes and paths right off the road are worth it as well.
We have been to many places like this throughout the country and nothing even compares to this. The drive through the trees is breathtaking. This is a must see trip.
