Review of Howland Hill Road

The largest trees you have ever seen in the most amazing forest you have ever seen, and you can do it all from your car. (Though you are insane if you don't hike the trails!) It is a dirt road, and can get dodgy in spots with potholes, but you don't need any special car to do it. The only caveat - see other Redwoods parks first, because once you see this park, places like Muir Woods won't be impressive anymore.

This ended up being one of the prettiest drives we took while touring the redwoods in Northern California.

We went here in the morning having stayed overnight in Crescent City. So we entered from the southwestern portion - from town we went south on 101, then east (left) on Elk Valley Rd and caught (right turn) Howland Hill Rd.

We were here the first week of October and essentially had the road to ourselves. We saw maybe one or two cars at the beginning but not again until we got to Stout Grove. It is so quiet and beautiful throughout this drive - definitely want to take your time through this tranquil area.

Highly recommend

I highly recommend this road to see the redwoods in all their glory. At the end of the road I feel like there was a parking area and thats where we got out and had some hiking action.

You will be amazed at the beauty nature has to offer in this part of the world!

I guess we were lucky to be here when it was not crowded. I imagine this road can become frustrating as it is rather narrow and one probably has to pull over quite a bit to let others pass. It is such a beautiful drive, well worth it.

This, is one real neat road. However, please note: It is a narrow one lane road that follows the hillside going in between the redwoods. along most of the road it is wide enough for one vehicle at best. There are pull offs (use them or lose!) And one must be patient, not all the people traveling this road have a clue. It is one of the most scenic roads that I have traveled. And if you are going to Stout Grove be forewarned; there are very few parking spots available there. People will park along the road and make even more narrow. But, the area is worth the effort. As a side note, as we were getting to the end of this narrow road-the western portion leads directly into Crescent City- we met a rental RV traveling towards us. . There are signs posted prohibiting usage by wide vehicles. I would how far they made it?
