Liked the food and service. Nice place to eat! I have heard about Cafe Pesto many times, but never eaten there until this trip. We were staying at the Hapuna Beach Hotel and this place it very close.

ENJOY

Initially my thoughts were "How good can this place be?" It was slightly off the beaten path and frankly the area looked a little funky. Generally your thoughts gravitate towards a working class type of restaurant when you're approaching the area but fear not. Inside, an bountiful oasis awaits you.
On one hand, 5 stars it isn't but they do offer an imaginative menu along with beer and wine. We had dined at their original location in Hilo and when we took our recent vacation in Waikoloa, we knew we had to try their latest location. Like a lot of good restaurants in Hawaii, Cafe Pesto strives to use local ingredients whenever possible. This bumps the price up a tad but it is worth it. We went their twice and the only disappointment was the Coconut dessert. I'm not crazy about flakes and that was the only negative aspect.

We expected the place much better after its high ratings. Sadly it turned out to be not good at all. We ordered soup of the day which was more or less tasteless and overcooked. More a supermarket than a restaurant soup. The special dish with pork rips, mango sauce and shrimp was also tasteless and pricey (with the small plate came just one shrimp). People were friendly and environment was good too. However we wouldn't recommend it, since we ourselfs left it unsatisfied and a bit frustrated.

Our friend who owns the condo we rent at Mauna Lani has been telling us about this place for years. We finally visited and can't figure out what took us so long! Just had our second lunch at Cafe Pesto in one week -- crab cakes on greens with miso dressing. Fresh and delicious -- hit the spot, especially accompanied by a local beer. During our last visit, our large party tried a few different pizzas, quesadilla, crab cakes, salads and more. Everybody enjoyed their meal (how often does that happen?), and we even purchased a to-go container of their creamy pesto dressing to enjoy when we dined in. Service was very friendly and efficient. A great little find even if it is in a glorified strip mall...
