For all who carry Hawaii or visions of a tropical paradise around in their heads, there is likely to be the idea of the great little island bar. This is that bar.

It is tiki in style, with thatch and tiki lamps, and an overall coconut ambience. The servers are friendly in the way of small town people who expect to see friends walk in the door. There are two happy hours, an early one and a late one. During happy hours, the drink prices are substantially lower, and there are $8 pupus, including ridiculously good coconut shrimp.

Whether you are a local or a visitor, this is a great place to stop for a bite to eat and a drink.

We have been to Hawaii numerous times but never stopped at the two main restaurants in Kawaihae by the marina. We finally were drawn by the Tuesday prime rib special advertised in one of the tourist magazines. Expecting it to be busy & it was, but the wait was not horrible. The place is small but comfortable, clean with friendly service. Our food was fantastic with the men in the group enjoying the prime rib & the women having seafood. The calamari appetizer was the best I've ever had - not your typical small chewy deep fried pieces but more of a filet. While there is no view (the back of storage silos at the marina), it didn't matter to us. Prices are lower compared to Waikoloa. Casual dress is fine. Don't know why it took us so long to try this, but we will definitely be back.

We ate here two times on our visit, seeking high quality food at a reasonable price (which is difficult to find on the islands). Here there is a variety of fresh and good food at a variety of price points. Service was great. Much better than overly lauded Pesto's, nearby.

Ok, view of fuel tanks at harbor isn't so great.

They make up for it with great food. Ahi poke burger was awesome.

Two visits, two days, nice service both times.

Also. Try Da Fish Shack two blocks up the road for fresh fish tacos from the lunch truck (relax, it isn't fancy but the food is good!) and FRESH fish and poke inside the yielding, and shave ice in the strip mall across the street.

This unassuming place has a great happy hour with five small plates for $8 each. The calamari and seafood quesadilla were my favorites, but others in our party of 6 liked the chicken wings and shrimp. The portions were quite big for appetizers, so each couple shared 3 appetizers and that was our dinner. Margaritas were good, and the house wine for happy hour was a good value for the money. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed!
