We stopped off on the way back from the Place/City of Refuge. It's worth a 10 minute stop as it is a beautiful little church, with beautifully painted interior. Leave a donation to help with the conservation.

I probably wouldn't make a special trip for it, but you should definitely stop by if you are in the area. After seeing lots of huge cathedrals, it was nice to see this little precious gem. They sell items outside to help support the upkeep. In keeping with the Hawaiian culture, Jesus even wears a lei. Biblical scenes are painted on the wall...hawaii's answer to the Sistine Chapel.

This church was so beautiful from the inside and out. The church was painted with Biblically scenes and the view on top was beautiful.

We really enjoyed going here. It is a little out of the way but well worth the drive. The inside of the church is stunning. The ceiling and walls are painted with Bible scenes and the ceiling has amazing colors from front to back. You can take pictures just be aware that some people may be worshipping inside.

Friends had mentioned the Painted Church on the Kona coast, and when we saw a road sign for Painted Church Road, we decided to detour there to check it out. The address in tourist literature did not quite match up with our GPS, but we eventually found the little church building.

The painted walls and ceiling reminded us of the St. Ignatius Mission in Montana, although the exteriors are quite different, and St. Benedict's is smaller. The colors of the paintings create a beautiful and restful place of worship. The pretty, white building is a lovely structure. We enjoyed a short stop.

Behind the church building, up a slight hill, is a small garden spot with three crosses and a statue of Mary and the crucified Jesus -- a place for quiet contemplation. The flowers in the garden in front of the church building were beautiful and probably lovingly tended by the church members. A small donation is certainly appropriate.
