“So happy we decided to check it out!”
Reviewed March 29, 2009

We went in September of 2008, and we thought this was a really interesting stop on our vacation to Hawaii. We loved the cultural references, and I loved the historical aspects and all of the infromation that was provided. The beach was beautiful to look at. Just a really nice spot overall, with some interesting features. We were able to take some great photos.

We also went back to the same area a few days after our initial visit to go snorkling. It was incredible! We just climbed right in off of the rocks, and there were tropical fish and sea turtles and anemones and all of that absolutely everywhere! It was unreal!!!
(You don't snorkle at the site, but at a nearby rocky cove area)

“Great place to stop”
Reviewed September 12, 2008

Very beautiful area. We went in close to dusk and watched the sunset, which was amazing. Great place to walk around and explore. We also went scuba diving the next day. It's hugely popular with tours so get there early or real late. The bay was full of snorkelers. I would definitely make time for it.

“Great stop - beautiful sunset!!!”
Reviewed July 24, 2008

We went to this park late one afternoon to walk around and view the sunset. We got in for free (there was a booth where it looked like you had to stop and pay, but when we got close up, there was just a sign that said "Continue Forward").

We had been here before on a previous trip to the Big Island. It is a very quiet and peaceful area. There weren't a lot of people at all. I think we saw a total of 3 or 4 other people. The sky was a bit cloudy but the clouds were high up and the sunset was beautiful once it got past the clouds. The structures and statues are interesting and you can get a lot of cool pictures here. It's definitely worth a stop. We drove here from Kona which is about a 25-30 minute drive and it was worth it!

“Great stop on a road trip”
Reviewed June 12, 2008

This was our very first stop after we landed in Kona and along our drive to volcano. There was a tollbooth at the entrance but no one was there except for a sign that said "continue forward." Not sure if this place is ALWAY free, but it was free for us this saturday afternoon, which was great! We were here for about 1 hour as we guided ourselves and took some great black and white pictures. Didn't think it was as interesting as everyone else reviewed it to be. But it's worth stop for good photo ops. Nice plus, we saw dolphins and turtles swimming in the bay. This is a nice place to site and just shoot the breeze.

“Very peaceful”
Reviewed June 7, 2008

Not a high traffic location which is very nice. Very well restored and preserved. Walk out of the lava flow and peek into the tide pools for small fish and soft corals, even saw a couple turtles out there. There was also a small cove we saw several turtles feeding next to the shore. And if you are a good snorkeler take some time to snorkel Honaunau Bay. Tons of fish and some of most beautiful coral we've seen in the islands.

Even though the the name "Place of refuge" had one meaning 800 years ago, it has a new meaning today. And it still fits perfectly.
