While driving back home, we decided to make the side stop in and visit. The guest area was very clean and the rangers were very helpful. They have a very comprehensive Jr. Ranger program. A first class way to learn about the area.

While travelling West on the i90 we saw a sign to the Pipestone National Monument. It was only 25 miles to the town of Pipestone where we saw beautiful heritage buildings made of blocks of Pipestone (red stone.) We found the Visitors' Centre and watched a movie explaining that Pipestone is a sacred site for the Indian people. They used the stone to fashion peace pipes, ornaments and artefacts. This pipestone was only found in this particular area layered between the Sioux quartzite. We took the trail through the prairie grasslands to see the quarry of pipestone outcrops. The walk passed through some interesting landforms and past a creek and waterfall. The walk was very well signposted. The only thing missing was a picnic table under a shady tree. We are so glad we made this side trip to Pipestone.

Interesting, good display and talking to one of the artisans was very informative. We took the walk and the area is beautiful and very peaceful. Quite a history!

This is definitely worth a visit. They had an excellent film explaining the area and an artisan giving a live demonstration. The walking trail was beautiful.

We live here but this is one of our regular visits any time of year. Trails are very nicely kept & the staff is very helpful. Bring your camera natural prairieland is hard to find. The falls are beautiful when the water is running in the spring or rain, but cover them with fresh snow & ice and breathtaking. Come see the sites.
