If you want to understand more about the history and culture of the Native Americans in the southwest, and particularly those in New Mexico, you cannot do better than a visit to the Maxwell. Well designed and carefully labeled exhibits illustrated with incredibly fine artifacts tell the story of the Indian experience in an easy to understand manner. Fantastic gift shop. No fee. Visitor parking adjacent to the museum.

Although a bit hard to find, the museum itself is awesome. The exhibits on the southwest are excellent. There is a lot of reading, but you learn a lot. There is also a good selection of pottery and lithics on display as well as an interesting mock archaeology dig to explain about the archaeological process. This museum also has one of the most informative displays on human evolution I've ever seen! It actually explains the different features of each proto-human (change in jaws, pelvic alignment, etc.) as well as has models of how the specific species looks. This gallery is nicely off to the side if evolution doesn't jive with your personal beliefs, so you need not be obligated to go through it. At the end though, there is a "cave" full of prehistoric art work that is really cool. The traveling exhibits go through the back gallery...when I went there was a bunch of historic and modern woven rugs. Definitely worth a visit if you're in to archaeology!

One of the most interesting small museums we've ever visited - great exhibits and very interesting artifacts. Could have spent much more time there. A must-see on the UNM campus.

As a student of UNM I worked at the Maxwell for a summer and while it was not my sort of interest I did find the exhibits they had to be very informative. The permanent stuff wasn't that great but the traveling stuff was very cool to see. I met many people from around the world to come see the New Mexican finds! I would recommend if you are interested in anthropology or New Mexican culture

It was not what I expected. If you read the signs, you will truly learn about NM anthropology.
