Description: In business since 1942, Duran Central Pharmacy is one of the oldest commercial establishments in Albuquerque. The pharmacy has grown considerably over the years, reflecting changes in the health and medical fields. The original soda fountain has grown into a small restaurant, serving New Mexican food and is famous in the area for its red and green chile. Duran's offers a wide variety of products from all over the world - from medicinal herbs to imported chocolates and fancy soaps to trendy gadgets. In addition, there is no better place for a genuine New Mexican enchilada or green chile cheeseburger!

Had a great breakfast at Duran's, which is a cafe inside a pharmacy. Amazing red and green chile, which you can buy by the jar to take home (or they will ship). I had a breakfast burrito with both red and green, and my husband had huevos rancheros with carne adovada (a special). Some of the best New Mexican food we've had in Albuquerque.

We visited Duran's Central Pharmacy for lunch during a recent visit to Albuquerque. I had heard about the restaurant for a long time so was anxious to try it. The atmosphere was great-I loved the lunch-counter feel! I ordered the red chile and beans, my husband had the huevos rancheros. While both meals were well served and the presentation very nice, we both felt that, overall, the flavor was kind of flat. The tortillas were made right before we ate them, but were oddly a little tough. I'm not saying the food was bad, but I don't know that I would go back. Having said that, though, it was very obvious that many people do go back often; the place was full of locals who obviously were regular customers. If I do go back, I would definitely try a different dish.

Make no mistake about it, this is a diner inside of a working pharmacy. It is also a locally recommended, top spot for authentic New Mexican cuisine and the source of a heated debate over the "correct" answer to the state question of red or green. The huevos rancheros are out of this world, the carne adovada is to die for, the torpedo is sinful, and the tortilla soup? Oh, man, I can't get enough! Hot, spicy, delicious, authentic food to be had here, folks. Everything is homemade on the premises and the tantalizing aromas waft right into the parking lot, reeling you in. I would have ate here every day had I been allowed to do so, as much for the local colour (and it can be quite colourful) as for the food itself. The pharmacy is pretty neat, too. Lots of hard to find brands, eclectic gifts, and jars of the restaurant's green and red chili are available for purchase. One of my favorite places in Albuquerque!

This place was a drug store/soda fountain in the old days; then they remodeled but kept the "soda fountain" and turned it into a restaurant that some locals say has the best chile sauce in the world. (They have an organized shipping system for it, so that should tell you something.) In addition to being a pharmacy (yes, you can get a prescription filled there) and some incredible Mexican food, they have a constantly changing display of local art work for sale, ranging from small statues to trivets and tiles, to paintings, much of which is dia de los muertos inspired. If you're going to Old Town anyway, you should check this place out. It's definitely off of the tourist track, and they've got some stuff on the shelves that I've never seen before or since.

This place has the best New Mexican food in the state, service is always excellent. No one does New Mexican food the way Duran Central Cafe does except Duran's Station...same food but Duran Station has a great beer and wine selection!
