So, in a city that loves food-a-tainment there's a new venue to try. I'll dismiss all of those things accocioated with a new place. What I can say is that wait staf has certainly been trained well - they are friendly and atttentive. The general atmosphere needs tweeking. In a noisy room - piping in music is problematic. The acoustics are such that it does not add to the ambiance - it's just an annoying distraction. I'm not sure I understand the big screen TV behind the bar. The volume is just enough to compete with the afore mentioned music and general restaurant noise. No one is watching it - so why is it on?

The waiting area is completely inadequate. Walk in the door and you have to bunch up with everyone else waiting to be seatedObviously this wasn't thought through. I suppose the plan is to quickly seat people. It's a nice goal, but not practical.

But of course the main reason to go out to eat, is to eat. I found the food to be just OK. The varied menu is a nice try but it just doesn't stand out. I think the potential is there, but work needs to be done to realize it.

Farina Alto opened a week ago tomorrow (Wednesday 24 April 2013), and my wife and I visited early on its first Saturday night. The owner was on-site, the room was nice (rustic and modern combined to ease the eye, with an odd vase over by the bathrooms excepted), and the music was bizarre (imagine that someone had created a Pandora channel based on Rupert Holmes' "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" . . . yikes). There were staff members standing around everywhere one looked, but the bathrooms (at 5 p.m.!) were kind of a wreck, with water splashed around on the sinks and wastebaskets overflowing).

(But the food was good.)

Not that it was fast arriving. It took longer than seemed necessary (given the hordes of staff milling around) to get someone to take our drink order, and then it took quite a while for the wine to be delivered. (Iced tea was filled and refilled promptly.) Food order (an antipasto platter and a meatball calzone) took a really long time to arrive, especially compared to the lightning-quick service at Farina's original location in EDo. When the food arrived, though, we were delighted: it was very nice and worth the wait.

(But why the wait on a dead early evening?)

Ordered a margherita pizza afterward and it took a preposterous amount of time to arrive. We'd given up and had been looking for the waitress to cancel for a timed ten minutes (Lord only knows where she went - disappeared into the back) when she arrived with the pie. It was okay, but not especially good (the calzone and antipasto platter were solidly good).

We'll give it another shot soon and see if this was just opening jitters.
